KCPF Safety Alert: Clarifying National Immigration Rumors & Fines

We are aware of significant anxiety and rumors circulating nationally regarding a "30 June deadline" and sudden R100,000 fines for employing undocumented workers. We want to share the facts with our Kirstenhof community to prevent unnecessary panic.

The Facts:

No "30 June" Government Deadline: Government has confirmed there is no official June 30 deadline. No person's legal status changes overnight due to this rumor.

The R100,000 Fine is Proposed, Not Active: The harsh financial penalties being quoted come from a proposed bill currently before Parliament. It is not active law, and no one is being handed on-the-spot fines at their gates.

Current Law Still Applies: While the headline numbers are just proposals, it remains an offense under existing law to knowingly employ anyone without the legal right to work. Homeowners should verify that domestic staff or gardeners have valid, legal documentation.

Private Spaces are Protected: Law enforcement or Home Affairs cannot enter a private home without a proper legal warrant.

Vigilantism is Unlawful: Private individuals, neighbors, or community groups have no legal authority to demand to see anyone's identity documents or passports. Only authorized immigration or police officers may do so in public spaces under reasonable suspicion.

We encourage all residents to avoid making hasty decisions based on social media rumors. Let’s keep our neighborhood calm, legal, and informed.

KCPF Safety Alert: Beware of Tax Scams

With tax season active, fraudsters are increasingly pretending to be from SARS or banks to steal money and personal information through fake refund notifications or urgent payment demands.

Red Flags to Watch For:

False Urgency: Messages threatening legal action or demanding immediate payment to release a refund.

Data Requests: Anyone asking for your banking PIN, password, or One-Time PIN (OTP). SARS and banks will never ask for these.

Suspicious Links: Unexpected links or attachments sent via SMS, email, or WhatsApp.

How to Protect Yourself:

Never Pay for a Refund: You do not have to pay a fee to receive a legitimate refund from SARS.

Verify Directly: Only access SARS or your banking profile through their official websites or trusted apps—never via shared links.

Pause and Check: If an alert feels strange, stop and verify it through official channels before sharing any data.

If you suspect your banking details have been compromised, contact your bank immediately. For Absa clients, the 24/7 Fraud Hotline is 0860557557
