SBONDABA DANCE IS OFF TO CHINA!
For the 2026 China–Africa Cultural Exchange: A Journey of Shared Vision
Taking place in Jingzhou, China and hosted by Bohai University.
SboNdaba Dance was invited to participate in live performances to promote cultural exchanges between China and Africa to strengthen Sino-African friendship. They were chosen because they “authentically represent vibrant African cultural heritage while embracing innovation and cross-cultural collaboration”.
2026 is China-Africa People to People Exchange Year, and there are many culture related activities taking place in China and African countries. Under this special background, the project aims to create and present original cross-cultural choreography rooted in African contemporary dance, bridging indigenous heritage and modern artistic expression.
Through performances, workshops, and collaborative engagements in China, the initiative seeks to foster artistic dialogue between African and Chinese cultural traditions while strengthening youth exchange and people-to-people connectivity.
Fourteen SboNdaba Dancers will travel with Artistic Director Sbonakaliso Ndaba and Managing Director Jennifer van Papendorp to Jinzhou. Through this exchange, the young South African dancers will:
• Collaborate with Chinese youth artists and students
• Participate in co-creation workshops
• Share techniques, stories, and cultural practices
• Build lasting friendships across cultures
En-route they will be stopping over in Beijing for a visit with “Beijing Dance Academy”, the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation with an excursion to the Great Wall of China.
“A Journey of Shared Vision” represents more than a performance tour — it is a platform for dialogue, creativity, and enduring friendship.
This project is sponsored by the Chinese Language Teachers Association South Africa with support from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
