📣 Latest research shows that estimated prevalence of Phelan-McDermid syndrome is higher than previously estimated.

The latest estimate is approximately 1 in 7,300 people (13.7 per 100,000), an increase from previous estimates of about 1 in 10,000.

But is Phelan-McDermid syndrome becoming more common? NO!

Increased prevalence rates reflect improvements in identification and measurement
✅ More people getting genetic testing
✅ Greater awareness of Phelan-McDermid syndrome among healthcare providers
✅ Expanded genetic testing that includes SHANK3
✅ More accurate methods for estimating prevalence

Why does this matter? Knowing how many people are living with Phelan-McDermid syndrome helps researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and policymakers better understand the community, plan clinical research, improve access to specialized care, and advocate for resources that families need.

The day has FINALLY arrived - we are doing the AlexanderBrave 100/100 Crepe Challenge!

My Dad is going to make 100 crepes on the day, but YOU can support my fundraising efforts in 2 ways:

1) Starting around 10am, come fetch a crepe (or 2 or 10) in Durbanville TODAY only, and give a small donation of your own amount on the day. We have 100 to give away, so don't miss out!

2) If you live too far away, or have previous arrangements, you can just EFT R100 to motivate my Dad!
