In South Africa, 9 August is celebrated as National Women's Day, a deeply significant public holiday rooted in the country’s history and struggle for equality.
🌟 Why It Matters
On 9 August 1956, over 20,000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid-era pass laws. These laws restricted the movement of Black South Africans. The women’s powerful slogan:
“Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo” (You strike a woman, you strike a rock)
became a lasting symbol of strength and resilience
