Ujamaa is more than an association. It is a family.
Our mission is to support communities in their daily lives by offering a smile, a look, and a presence they can hold on to so they do not feel alone. They are our brothers and sisters. People with stories, struggles, and dreams, who deserve to be heard.
In the streets, in the camps, facing the cold, the rain, and uncertainty, we move forward together. Because no one should have to face the harshness of life alone.
Ujamaa is a helping hand, a listening ear, and a deep belief that together, things can change.

A few weeks ago, we went out to meet our community . What we saw there deeply affected us. Even with the rain, wind, and cold, many people do not have warm clothes. They are trying to survive in very difficult conditions without proper protection from the weather.
Recently, strong storms have hit Cape Town, and they have shown us how much our brothers and sisters need help. The first people affected are our Ujamaa community. Children and whole families are facing this situation alone. When the storms come, there is no door to close, no solid roof, no heating to fight the cold. Only fear, uncertainty, and long nights that are hard to get through.
Our community needs us, and needs you. We cannot leave them alone during this time. More than ever, we need to stand together.
Every donation makes a real difference: a blanket, a hot meal, a warm jacket. Small things that can bring comfort and hope in a very hard moment.

Yesterday, we went back to Kensington, to the refugee camp.
It had been several weeks since we were able to go, so seeing our Ujamaa again felt really special.

We brought food, coffee, clothes, dishes… but most importantly, we came to spend time with them.

We played with the children, shared laughs, and spent time talking with some of them over a coffee. We also talked about the future, their dreams, their plans, and what they hope to become despite the difficulties they are facing today.

Thank you to everyone who supports us and makes it possible for us to keep going.

A huge thank you to the student from for becoming such a great support to us this week.

Thanks for your time, your energy, and your generosity, we were able to prepare meals and support people in need within the community. Every sandwich prepared, every smile, and every act of solidarity truly means so much.

Your commitment reminds us that kindness and compassion can truly make a difference, especially as winter approaches.

Thank you for walking alongside us to bring warmth and hope to those who need it most.

This week, we went to CPUT to distribute food and supplies to our Ujamaas.

It was a moment filled with sharing and joy, despite the difficulties some had in remaining patient. Sometimes, we tend to forget that our Ujamaas who live out on the streets have to do everything they can in order to survive. So, some may lose their patience, but they mean no harm, and they understand our mission.

This distribution was once again, as always, a meaningful time of sharing, where attention and understanding are at the heart of what we do. We would like to thank our new volunteer who came to help us on his day off. The strength and time he gave us were an immense gesture of support for us.

Thank you very much 🤍

A new immersion in the Kesington neighborhood, meeting residents as part of a training program.

Once again, a powerful experience, driven by sharing, listening, and a great deal of hope. These moments remind us of the value of exchange and the richness of human connections.

Many thanks again to Professor Brian William for his invitation and kindness throughout our discussions 🤍

In this post, we share the stories of three people we met during two days of training at St John’s Church. For reasons of confidentiality, we have changed their names in order to protect their anonymity.

Three different lives, yet one shared reality: hardship, loss, and a daily struggle for survival. Behind each journey lie precarity, isolation, overwhelming responsibility, and addiction. And yet, each of them, in their own way, continues to stand and to hold on to hope for a better future.

John once believed he could build a stable life after finding a job and becoming independent. But the loss of his employment changed everything. With no income and rejected by his family, he found himself alone, without housing or support. Gradually, his precarious situation led him to drugs. Today, he survives day by day, searching for food and trying to hold on to a fragile sense of hope. His goal remains simple but vital: to recover official identification so he can work again and rebuild his life.

Myriam, 17 years old, has been raising her younger brother alone for four years. To meet their needs, she has had to work while continuing her studies. But faced with an impossible choice between education and survival, she was forced to leave school. Despite this, she continues to fight for both of them. Her dream remains unchanged: to return to education, earn a diploma, and become a psychologist in order to help others.

Marie has seen her life unravel through a series of losses. She lost both of her children within a few years, and later her father became seriously ill. Overwhelmed by grief, she turned to drugs as a way to escape her suffering. Today, she is trying to rebuild herself, stop using drugs, and regain stability in order to begin living again.

These three stories, marked by loss and precarity, all reflect the same quiet strength: the will to hope, and to rebuild despite adversity 🫶🙏🏻

The Ujamaa community spent two days of training organized with St John’s Church in Maitland, which gave us the opportunity to meet brave and inspiring young people who are determined to change their lives and build a better future.

During the workshops, we supported them in reflecting on their aspirations and what they want to become. These two days were also focused on structuring their goals, including CV development, in order to help them better define their career paths and understand what we can do to support them in their journey.

A strong emphasis was placed on encouraging them to resist returning to harmful habits such as violence and addiction, and instead commit fully to positive change. Their motivation and presence already represented a significant step forward. We reminded them of the importance of perseverance and continuous effort in building a better life and increasing their chances of securing stable employment.

We were also fortunate to be accompanied throughout these two days by a man who spent 25 years in prison and is the author of a book about his life journey. Now free for 23 years without reoffending, he led and guided the sessions, sharing his powerful testimony and serving as a strong source of inspiration.

We are truly grateful to have been part of such an emotional and meaningful experience filled with sharing and encouragement. We sincerely thank Mr. Derick for inviting us, as well as Professor Brian William for this wonderful partnership opportunity during these unforgettable two days 🤍

It’s been a while since we last posted. Over the past weeks, we’ve been deeply focused on the work happening out in the field reaching out, supporting, and standing beside those going through some of the hardest moments of their lives.
And during that time, we were never alone. Some truly amazing souls stepped forward with open hearts donating clothes, shoes, and even contributing financially. Your kindness has carried us further than you know. To our incredible volunteers who showed up in the scorching sun, without shade or water, still choosing compassion over comfort… thank you. You are the heartbeat of everything we do.
Today, more than ever, we’re asking our community to join hands. Even when we don’t agree. Even when emotions run high. Even when things feel heavier than ever for those around us. Let us choose not to blame, but to uplift. Let our words be gentle. Let kindness be louder than frustration. Let compassion guide us through this difficult time.
May love speak louder than pain. May understanding rise above division. And may we continue to show up for one another because together, we can bring hope where it feels most lost.
Thank you for standing with us. ❤️🙏
