On the EDGE

On the EDGE On The Edge exists to take people on a transformation journey of discovery with Christ.

We do this through building relationships with hurting people on the fringes of our city, equipping them to become change agents in their own areas of influence.

As we always are, Charles Kadalie, Gerhard Barnard, Marinda Barnard and I Valentia Kadalie were blessed ourselves by our engagement with our group of men in prison yesterday. 38 male voices raised the roof in songs of worship. One by one they are telling the stories. From way back to where their lives began to where it derailed. As he read out loud the group’s feedback “This is who I am” statement, a grown man cried soft intense tears that he forgot he had. The others encouraged him that it is OK to cry.
One of the men at the end came to me and said, “Aunty Val I want you to listen to this commencement speech. Your (Charles’) guitar reminded me of a speech I listened to in the week.
Late last night we googled it and it stirred my spirit.
So I share it with you. May this lesson on the strings of a guitar encourage you to be more. To love more. To hope more. To trust more. To inspire more. To be more real. After all, we can only bring healing to someone else through and out of our own brokenness.
I just loved it and so I share it with you. Let me know what you receive from it.
And I’ll feed back to our friend in prison next week.
Enjoy.

A Beautiful memory just popped up. On The Edge was just 1 year old. 6 years on we are thankful to God for all He has done. For lives that were changed. For miracles. For the mistakes we made and the lessons we learned along the way. God help the outcast is still our heart cry🙏

In the space Charles Kadalie and I build relationships in, accountability is vitally important. A few of our champions got together for a meal, fellowship and an accountability talk. I call them champions because we have to believein each one of them long before they believe in themselves. Despite their very real challenges, they are still standing. So that’s worth celebrating 🙌🏼🎉 Valentia Kadalie
We were blessed to have Sibusiso Victor Banda and Athenkosi Magqaza join us to encourage them on this journey to life and faith in Christ. They take away every excuse. Thank you Sibu and Athi. 💕

Some of our WinACity team are praying for specific men in prison. One of these prayer warriors is our friend Letsie De Beer. She joined us on Wednesday and met the group of 43 men we are working with in prison.
I would like to share her insights and her experience.
She writes:

A PRIVILEGED EXPERIENCE

A Morning of Worship & Scriptural Life Study!
I had the privilege of joining On the Edge, Charles, Val and Gerhard, Tuesday morning for a gathering inside the correctional facility in Wellington. A deeply moving experience.
I am not sure what I expected, but what I encountered was so much more… No passivity, no resistance — just hunger. Friendly and accepting men worshipped, wholeheartedly. Their voices carried a sincerity that can only come from a place of deep need, and as later stated by one of the men, deep hope, hope and more hope.
They were attentive, engaged, and open. Many participated in the discussions, with humility and honesty, expressing a genuine desire to grow in Christ and to become different men, different than the ones who once entered those gates.
It wasn’t “aangeplak”, not “let’s just get this over” — it was so authentic. I was truly touched that the Word of God was not abstract to them, it is a lifeline, an anchor, and I think, the long term commitment and consistency of Charles and Val, is seeds of invitation to real transformation.
What struck me most was the atmosphere of respect and brotherhood. The mentors in the rooms (men who are in prison with them who have done the QUEST journey last year) carefully help and assist and facillitate small group discussions in their prison cells.
I also experienced the pride in them when they could share their answers through completed homework. There is an accountability in the sense of respect, listening, leaning in and take part towards the program. Something I honour God, Charles and Val for.
Hearing the “Onse Vader” in solid, deep men’s voices made me look up with closed teary eyes – imagining this must be what it sounds like when we enter heaven…for a moment I forgot where we were, and seeing the orange suits in front of me…I could just smile… Lord, you truly do have a sense of humour. No wall is high enough, no deed too deep, to block the work of God in an open and willing heart.
Thank you for allowing me to share in this experience. A harvest space where restoration begins. It is and will be a continuous journey towards healing, self-forgiveness and especially understanding Godly DNA, but that goes for all of us!
I personally walked out with an inspired heart, filled with hope, deep hope and more hope!!

For obvious reasons I don’t have a single picture to share about our on going relationship and deep conversations with sentenced incarcerated men as we journey with them through QUEST.
This is an incredible tool that draws them into a journey of self discovery. Discovery about Who God is and about the clues God gives them in their life stories.
These clues, as they discover them bring them closer to understanding their God given purpose. And importantly to a place of repentance and deliverance.
We are at the beginning of a new year with this group of 40 + new men that we are getting to know.
During this year we will get to visit their homes and families spread across the city from Darling to Hermanus and all the townships in between.
And we will continue to be in a mentoring relationship on the outside, upon their release, with those who are committed to a transformation journey and who will hold themselves accountable.
And no it doesn’t always work out. Some end up back in prison and some end up dead.
And our hearts ache.
But the ones who make it are a precious gift to God’s Kingdom as they live out their transformed lives. Often with slip and slides in between. But always with such wonder at the finished work of Christ.
Two comments particularly struck me from amongst the current group as they prayed .
“Lord I come to you with our broken pasts and our broken lives….”
“Help us to move with our shame towards You God, and not away from You….
Charles Kadalie, Valentia Kadalie and Robyn Russell value your prayers for God’s provision , protection and that we will be dispensers of His grace to these men and their families.
Pray too that God will make us invisible the enemy who tries to distract and derail us in so many different ways. But as the old hymn says, “We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. Trusting in His Holy Word, He’s NEVER failed us yet!”

We had an awesome response to my request for 18 Bibles for our new QUEST group in prison. Thank you, Derick Slabbert!
Not 30 men as we expected, but 49 were present and engaged at our second meeting on Wednesday.
13 of the 49 men graduated from our 2025 group in December and are staying on as room mentors for the new men. We will be meeting this same group of men weekly for this full year.
I want you to imagine them meeting in small groups in their prison cells to discuss very deep guided questions as they review and reflect on their lives and future.
Pray for those discussions! And that leaders will be developed out of this group of incarcerated men. God is able to do that and more!
It’s going to be intense work for us as we begin engaging with the families of these men.
Pray for our provision in terms of costs and for our protection in often very unsafe areas.
WhatsApp me if you would like to partner with us in any way.
Or if you would like to visit with us and meet this group us one day.
Grateful to all who pray and support to make this possible ! 🙏

Hi everyone. Our new QUEST group at prison started yesterday. 30 new men and 8 from Last year’s group who will be room mentors for the new men. I expect some attrition as the intensity increases each week.
But that is a large number in a small space 😂
Pray for this group of men that we will be working with weekly for the full year🙏
18 do not have Bibles. I need 9 English and 9 Afrikaans.
If any of you or your organisations have Bibles (Old and New Testament) versions that you are willing to pass on to us, PLEASE let me know. 🙏💕

Our story of faith adventures. Very much an On The Edge story. Contact Valentia Kadalie or Robyn Russell or Charles Kadalie to buy your copy or to gift a friend who needs to understand Who God is or needs to know that He is close this Christmas.

Some folk wanted to buy a copy of my book Kissing the Waves I’ve received another print. Contact me to buy a copy or to buy it as a gift to a friend. The waves have not stopped crashing but Charles Kadalie keeps reminding me that God is Who He says He is.

Today as a body of followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, we bid a last farewell to Pastor Derrick Schroeder, senior Pastor at Lighthouse Christian Centre who has been our Board Chairman for On The Edge since our inception 5 and a half years ago. It was a beautiful tribute to his life of service and love for God and those who knew him and were touched by his humanity. Derrick was so aptly described by Pastor Hohan Meiring as a “pacesetter” in his ministry and leadership roles.
Life is a marathon is it not.
The primary role of a pacesetter in a marathon he said, is to maintain a steady, predetermined speed in order to help other runners achieve a specific goal time.
They set a consistent, fast tempo. They run at an exact, predetermined speed to ensure a record-breaking or the best overall race finish.
They run in front and so they break the wind, which helps runners behind them conserve energy.
They reduce mental pressure of individual runners because they handle the stress of monitoring split times and they constantly checking the clock. This allows the main competitors to focus purely on running their race.
They run their part at the target pace and then drop out of the race around the halfway mark leaving the athletes to race for the win.
The pacesetter doesn’t hear the bell ring for the last lap or hear the crowds roar at the finish.
But those he set the pace for, do.
That role described Derrick so well. We will miss your leadership Derrick. But you have set the pace. Your kegacy continues. Our race will carry on to the finish line.
I was the lousiest of athletes. I do not have an athletic bone in my body.
But by God’s grace I’d love to be a pacesetter just like you.
Enjoy the worship in Heaven my friend. 💕🙏
