Food Indaba 2026 - Food Systems and Water Systems: Rivers, Oceans, Aquifers and Rainfall (ROAR)

How will our food system respond to changing water systems?

As the climate crisis intensifies, the world’s water systems - from rainfall and rivers to oceans and underground aquifers - are under growing strain. Droughts, floods, pollution, and overuse are reshaping how water moves through every part of the food system.

From 20 July to 2 August 2026, the Food Indaba will bring together food growers, water experts, policymakers, researchers, chefs, activists, and citizens to explore how water shapes our food systems - and what this means for people and the planet.

The 2026 programme will focus on:
* People Building Water Resilience - farmers and communities adapting to changing rainfall.
* Restoring the Lifelines - reviving riverine and catchment ecosystems.
* People of the Water - shaping a fair and sustainable blue food economy.
* Cities Creating Circular Futures - reimagining urban water and food flows.
* Water Justice and the Right to Food - ensuring equitable access across Africa.

Building on the success of the 2025 Food Indaba, this next edition expands with new partners - ABALOBI and the Two Oceans Aquarium. We also continue partnerships with SOLVE@Waterfront, DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, Makers Landing, Cape Town Science Centre, UNESCO Chair in Science and Education for African Food Systems, Daily Maverick: Food Justice and Cape Town TV.

A Story of Resilience Through Urban Farming

When Mzi Mashicila lost his job during the Covid-19 pandemic, he turned to a small community garden in Langa for a new start. What began as a way to grow food has become a herbal tea business.

At Food Indaba 2025, Mzi shared his journey during a session called Tea with a Farmer, where guests sampled his locally grown lemongrass blends and heard how urban farming helped him rebuild his life.

His story is a reminder of how small-scale agriculture and community support can lead to new opportunities.

What is the real cost of the food on our plate and the wine in our glass?

In her latest Daily Maverick piece, Zukiswa Pikoli reflects on her time with farmworkers outside Cape Town and the urgent issues they face, from low pay and seasonal work to pesticide exposure and intimidation.

These hard truths were echoed at this year’s Food Indaba, where conversations around food insecurity and waste made it clear: our food system needs deep change, starting with how we treat the people who grow and harvest our food.

Cape Town TV recently featured a segment on the Zero Waste Summit, highlighting some of the key ideas, voices, and energy behind the event.

It’s a great overview of what the summit set out to achieve, from community-driven solutions to systems-level thinking around waste, sustainability, and circular economies.
