Cubs & Scouts A little bit of history:

The 1st Kirstenhof Cub Pack was opened by Shoena Smith in 1992/3 and run successfully from the hall at Kirstenhof Primary before it closed down in 1995/ 1996 due to lack of adult support. A Troop seems to have opened in 1997 with the same scarf in the same venue but seems to

have closed again in 1999. If anyone has a more clear timeline, please let us know :)

We have registered the 1st Kirstenhof Sea Scout Group but pay heed to the first 1st Kirstenhof Scout Group by adopting the same scarf. We will have a new logo, cap and group tape. We have been successfully running a full to the brim Pack since October 2021 with many happy Cubs enjoying the Cub programme. Present Day:

We opened a Scout Troop on 27 July 2022 with 14 new Recruits and look forward to seeing it grow from strength to strength.

🧭 An Orienteering Adventure Around the Greenbelt 🧭

Last night our Scouts swapped the hall for the outdoors and headed off on an adventure around the Kirstenhof Greenbelt.

Starting at the CHS Life Centre, each patrol was given a map and some equipment before being challenged to locate a series of activity bases. The Scouts had to put their navigation skills to work, practising mapwork and compass bearings to find their way around the course.

Along the way, patrols were tasked with building shelters using only tarps and ropes, before taking on what may have been the evening's toughest challenge: blindfolding their Patrol Leader and directing them to make a cup of tea!

The combination of navigation, teamwork, communication and problem-solving made for a fantastic evening outdoors. Despite the cold and cloudy weather, the Scouts embraced the challenge and enjoyed a well-earned break from the books during the busy exam period.

Congratulations to **Penguins Patrol**, who were named Patrol of the Evening. ⚜️

🍔 Burgers - but make it a scavenger hunt! 🍔

Last week our Scouts were challenged to create the best burger of the evening, but first they had to earn the right to start cooking.

The challenge began with a coded message which led them on a scavenger hunt around the base in search of their starter ingredients. While gathering supplies, patrols also had to get their fires going and start planning their approach for the cooking challenge ahead.

Once they had everything they needed, it was time to get creative. Patrols could earn additional points by demonstrating various Scouting skills, which they could then trade for bonus ingredients such as pineapple, onion marmalade and pickles.

What followed was a busy evening of fire lighting, teamwork, problem-solving, bargaining, cooking and plenty of friendly competition.

By the end of the night, every patrol had produced a well-cooked burger and the standard was impressively high. The judges certainly didn't go hungry!

Congratulations to **Eagles Patrol**, who were voted the best overall patrol of the evening. ⚜️🔥🍔

🔥 Playing with Fire (Safely!) 🔥

Last week our Cubs learned one of the classic outdoor skills of Scouting: firecraft.

The evening started with a discussion about fire safety, how to prevent fires from getting out of control, and what to do in a fire emergency. We then moved on to one of the most exciting milestones for many Cubs - learning how to safely light a match.

After a few energetic games, the Cubs gathered around for a demonstration of different fire lays and learned about the fire triangle: heat, fuel and oxygen. They discovered how different fire structures are suited to different purposes, from quick cooking fires to larger campfires.

The highlight of the evening was putting those skills into practice. Working in their Sixes, the Cubs gathered their materials, laid their own fires, and - with careful supervision - successfully lit them.

There is always something special about seeing a Cub light a fire for the first time. It takes patience, responsibility, teamwork and a healthy respect for safety.

A fantastic evening of learning, confidence-building and outdoor adventure. ⚜️🔥

⛵ Another Great Day on the Water ⛵

A couple weekends ago, our Scouts once again teamed up with 1st Naruna Constantia aboard boat number 8, the Red Baron, for a brilliant regatta at the Sea Scout Base.

The morning brought calm conditions for the rowing races, while a bit more wind arrived in the afternoon to make for some enjoyable sailing.

A special congratulations goes to Colin, who is currently working towards his Helmsman Badge and took charge for several races during the day. It's always great to see our Scouts stepping up and putting their training into practice.

A huge thank-you to Ruan and the Naruna Scouts for another fantastic day of teamwork, support and good company on the water.

Most importantly, our Scouts had a great time, gained valuable experience, and finished the day with a very respectable 7th place overall. Well done, everyone!

👾 A Monster of a Meeting! 👾

This week our Cubs got creative and worked together to build their own very unusual monster pack. Each Cub drew a head, middle and legs on a folded piece of paper that was swapped around with every round - all without being able to see what the other body parts looked like.

The final reveals were absolutely hilarious 😄 From extra eyes and giant teeth to some very questionable legs, the results were wonderfully weird and incredibly creative.

Lots of laughs, loads of imagination, and some truly unforgettable monster creations! ⚜️💛

⚜️ Why the Patrol System Matters ⚜️

This week’s meeting was all about understanding the Patrol System - and why strong leadership and teamwork are such an important part of Scouting.

To start the evening, we removed the Patrol Leaders, mixed up the patrols, and gave the Scouts one simple instruction: build a shelter to protect themselves from the “incoming rain.”

What followed was wonderfully chaotic 😄 - lots of running around, confusion, half-formed plans, and plenty of noise, with nobody quite sure what was happening.

We then regrouped everyone back into their patrols with their Patrol Leaders and gave them exactly the same challenge again. The difference was immediate. Suddenly there was organisation, communication, teamwork, and clear leadership - and the shelters came together in a much safer, calmer and more effective way.

It turned into a really good practical demonstration of why the Patrol System works so well, and the important role Patrol Leaders play in helping their teams succeed.

Most importantly, it looked like the Scouts had an absolute blast along the way. ⚜️💚
