Before he became Fernando Pessoa, he was a schoolboy in Durban.

Long before the heteronyms, before Mensagem, before he became one of the 20th century's most haunting literary voices, Fernando Pessoa spent his formative years at Durban High School — a chapter of his life far less known than the Lisbon cafés and the trunk of unpublished manuscripts.

Richard Zenith — translator, biographer, and one of the world's foremost Pessoa scholars, author of the New York Times-acclaimed Pessoa: A Biography and winner of the 2012 Prémio Pessoa — is bringing that South African chapter home, in conversation with three of the country's own literary voices: journalist Jean Meiring (Johannesburg), festival-founder Darryl David (Cape Town), and playwright Neil Coppen (Durban).
