As we wrap up International Women’s Month, we’re proud to spotlight the leadership of women behind Africa REACH’s founding partners.
The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF) and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) are both led by African women whose work continues to shape the HIV and TB response across the continent.
Professor Linda-Gail Bekker, Chief Executive Officer of DTHF, has many accolades to her name and is globally recognised for her leadership in HIV and tuberculosis research, prevention, and treatment.
Dr. Doris Macharia, President of EGPAF, brings over 25 years of experience and is recognized for advancing health equity and leading large-scale programmes across multiple countries.
Their leadership reflects the power, expertise and impact of African women at the forefront of global health.

As a lead-up to the Global NGO Stakeholders Summit (22–24 April, Nairobi), Africa REACH Leadership Council member and award-winning journalist, Leon Lidigu, will moderate a conversation on ending 'TB through partnerships, innovation, and sustainable financing.'

Held in the context of World TB Day (24 March), this moment is especially significant. The 2026 theme, “Yes! We can end TB,” highlights the power of collective action and renewed commitment to ending the global TB epidemic. World TB Day serves as both a reflection on progress made and a call to accelerate efforts to eliminate TB as a public health threat.

🔈Africa REACH is opening the next round of its National Grants Program, inviting community and youth-led organisations to submit proposals focused on advancing sustained domestic financing for HIV.
Now entering its third phase, the programme continues to support organisations working at the frontlines of the HIV response to influence policy, strengthen accountability, and ensure the needs of children, adolescents and young people remain central in national decision-making.
For this round, proposals should focus on advocacy efforts that strengthen domestic financing commitments for HIV, including engagement with policymakers, ministries of finance and health, and other key stakeholders.
Grants of up to $30,000 USD will be awarded for projects implemented between April and September 2026.
Eligible countries:
The Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Nigeria, Cameroon and Mozambique.
Organisations with experience in advocacy and policy engagement are encouraged to apply.
Application deadline: 19 March 2026

Africa REACH is pleased to announce that it has secured funding from Gilead Sciences to strengthen youth leadership and African-led accountability in the HIV response. Through this funding, Africa REACH will advance four strategic priorities: Strengthening continental accountability for ending AIDS in children and adolescents; safeguarding and expanding domestic financing for paediatric HIV; scaling in-country advocacy through the National Grants Programme; and reinforcing Africa REACH’s model of African-driven advocacy.
This funding comes at a critical moment. Sustaining progress toward the 2030 targets requires political leadership, domestic investment and structured accountability.

The third edition of the African Workshop on Women & HIV will take place in Cape Town on 12-13 March 2026 in a hybrid format, bringing together voices from across the continent and beyond.
This regional workshop, paired with the annual International Workshop on Women & HIV, focuses on improving quality of life and reducing HIV transmissions across Africa. This year’s programme will examine how language shapes stigma, the role of communities and men in supporting women’s empowerment and the impact of digital spaces on adolescent mental health. Discussions will also explore strengthening integrated healthcare services and sustaining continuity of care amid ongoing funding pressures.
Africa REACH has been proud to contribute to previous editions and remains an endorser of this important platform, supporting continued dialogue and action to advance equitable, people-centred HIV responses for women across Africa.

To kickstart our advocacy efforts for 2026, Africa REACH Campaign Lead, Sonia Ndimbira, joined leaders, policymakers and partners at the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union this past week, participating in key side events and strategic discussions.
This important meeting provides a platform to elevate urgent priorities in Africa’s HIV response, particularly at a time when sustaining momentum, strengthening partnerships and advancing community-centred solutions are more critical than ever.
Africa REACH remains committed to ensuring that the voices and needs of communities most affected by HIV continue to shape continental dialogue and action.
We look forward to building on these engagements as we advance advocacy, partnerships and impact across the continent in the year ahead.

2025 was a challenging year for the development and HIV response. Global funding freezes placed significant pressure on programmes, advocacy efforts and hard-won gains across the continent.
In response to this context, Africa REACH supported work focused on sustainability and long-term impact. We initiated the Domestic Resource Mobilisation (DRM) series to spotlight best-practice examples of sustained domestic financing for health and HIV in African countries, at a time when locally led solutions became increasingly critical.
Through our national grants programme, grantee partners led community and policy-level advocacy on long-acting HIV prevention and treatment options, contributing to broader national conversations on education, procurement, access and financing of long-acting HIV medications.
This year also saw important milestones for the African continent, including the registration of long-acting PrEP by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA). This represents a significant breakthrough for HIV prevention, and we are proud that one of our 2025 grantees- The Aurum Institute was part of a wider civil society ecosystem whose advocacy efforts focused on this milestone.

We are grateful to our partners and grantees for their leadership, commitment and collaboration throughout a complex year.

Wishing you a restful festive season and a hopeful start to the year ahead!
