In what started out as the Feed the Nation campaign on 7 April 2020, and partnering with funders, Pick n Pay customers, suppliers and welfare organisations, Feed the Nation Foundation has provided almost 30-million meals since lockdown began in March 2020. In the early stage of lockdown, the Feed the Nation team helped distribute 26 000 food hampers for development agency, Afrika Tikkun, packing and distributing 650 tonnes of food in only two weeks. Our partnerships have grown to include, among others, Joint Aid Missionaries (JAM), SA Harvest, Foodforward SA, The Kolisi Foundation, the Habana Foundation, Courage, Danone and Kellogg’s. Most recently, in a partnership with the Western Cape and FoodforwardSA, the Foundation also began providing critical food assistance to those with compromised immune systems who are not well enough to work.

We partnered with our incredible IT team to donate 35 food hampers to learners at Al Wagga School for the Hearing Impaired, ensuring each child could take essential nutrition home to their families.

The excitement was tangible, not just in receiving the hampers, but in knowing their households would be supported too.

What made this handover especially meaningful was having our IT team join us on the ground, experiencing first-hand the impact of this work and the communities we serve every day.

Children deserve to learn and grow, free from hunger.

Read about our recent project where we were proud to partner with Pick n Pay, supplying all the food parcels to support learners at Corrie Lynn Primary School in Pietermaritzburg through a special handover focused on dignity and access.

Each child received a packed bundle including a food hamper, school shoes, uniforms, stationery, and hygiene essentials, ensuring they have what they need both in and out of the classroom. The initiative also strengthened the school’s feeding scheme, supporting learners from vulnerable households facing daily food insecurity.

Yet in South Africa, around 16–18 million people face food insecurity, and many children arrive at school without having eaten. (Statistics South Africa, General Household Survey)

If your organisation believes every child deserves a fair start, we invite you to partner with us in building a more food-secure future.

“There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.”
— Mahatma Gandhi

What began as an emergency response has grown into a mission to ensure that children across the country have access to food. But more importantly, we try keeping our local commuities' dignity intact, because that matters too! And for many, meals remind us that someone cares.

The need is vast, but everyday we try to show up! And with the right partners, we can reach even more families and children. If your organisation is looking to make an impact, we invite you to partner with us.

Thinking back to this wonderful feature by SAT Articles on our inaugural Project School Takeover — a multi-school intervention programme designed to give under-resourced rural learners a dignified, supported start to the academic year. 💛

This initiative is rooted in collaboration, with our wonderful partners.
