In Cakweme Village, KwaZulu-Natal, access to reliable water is supporting both agricultural production and the wellbeing of the wider community.

The Cakweme Farmers benefit from a solar-powered borehole launched in 2022 in partnership with Innovation Africa, providing an important water source for farming activities. Reliable access to water helps farmers manage their crops and strengthen agricultural production.

The benefits extend beyond the farm. Eleven communal taps have also been installed, bringing clean water closer to households and providing approximately 4,500 people with daily access to clean water.

For farming communities, water is essential to growing food, sustaining livelihoods and supporting healthy communities. In Cakweme Village, this investment in water infrastructure is helping create the conditions for farmers to produce while improving access to clean water for households.

From the farm to the community, access to water is helping create opportunities for growth and more sustainable livelihoods.

Celebrating the women who make change possible.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who lead, build, nurture and create opportunities often in the face of challenges, and always with a vision for a better future.

From women farmers and entrepreneurs to educators, community leaders and changemakers, their work strengthens families, creates livelihoods and helps communities thrive.

| Growing Sustainable Livelihoods

During our ongoing visit, the team visited Vhumunho Development Empowerment in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, where we met the 11 farmers of the Kildare Farming Project.

With support through training, infrastructure development and market access, these emerging farmers are building a sustainable farming business on a 2-hectare farm. Their first harvest is expected in September, with markets already secured in the hospitality industry.

More than a farming project, this initiative is creating opportunities for farmers to build sustainable livelihoods, restore dignity and strengthen their communities.

| Learning Through Play

Through its Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Hub in the Mashishini community, Cotlands is helping ensure more young children benefit from quality, play-based learning experiences. By supporting 27 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres with mentoring, educational resources and play materials, ECD practitioners are better equipped to create engaging learning environments where children can develop essential skills through play.

With plans to establish an additional hub to support ECD centres near surrounding farms, even more children will have access to nurturing early learning opportunities that help lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

Yesterday, the HCI Foundation, in partnership with Golden Arrow Bus Services, proudly hosted the Community Transport Support Programme 2026 in Cape Town under the theme Working in the Margins.

The programme brought together community organisations, partners and stakeholders to recognise the vital work being done to create access, opportunity and resilience within our communities. It was a day of meaningful dialogue, shared learning and renewed commitment to supporting those working where the need is greatest.

The programme was enriched by outstanding performances from the Cape Town Opera choir, Jazzart, Baxter Theatre's Zabalaza Festival and the West Coast Youth Orchestra. Their artistry reminded us that storytelling, music and movement are powerful tools for connecting people, inspiring action and celebrating the resilience of our communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our speakers, partners, guests and everyone who contributed to the success of the day. It is through collaboration and shared purpose that we can continue to expand access to opportunity and create lasting social impact.

Thank you for being part of this important journey.

The Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT) in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, has done it again and what a proud moment it is.

We proudly celebrate COSAT on being ranked, for the third time, as the top-performing public Quintile 3 school in South Africa at the National Education Excellence Awards 2026, hosted by the Department of Basic Education. Having previously earned this honour in 2017 and 2022, COSAT's continued excellence is truly cause for celebration.

This accomplishment is particularly significant given the socioeconomic challenges faced by the community it serves. It is a powerful reminder that with access to quality education, dedicated educators, supportive families and the right opportunities, young people can thrive regardless of circumstance.

The award celebrates the exceptional performance of COSAT's learners, all of whom study Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Information Technology/Computer Applications Technology. It also recognises the unwavering dedication of the school's leadership, educators and parents in creating an environment where excellence is not only encouraged but consistently achieved.

Congratulations to the entire COSAT community on this well-deserved recognition.
