𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭
Every year on 31 July, the world pauses to honour rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the tireless work they do protecting our planet's natural treasures and cultural heritage.

The International Ranger Federation recognises rangers as true frontline defenders of planetary health, their roles spanning wildlife protection, law enforcement, environmental education, community engagement, fire management, and sustainable resource use. Whether state employed, community based, Indigenous, or volunteer, they are essential to safeguarding protected areas.

Recent estimates put the global ranger workforce at around 286,000, yet meeting global 30x30 conservation targets will require growing that number to 1.5 million skilled, well supported rangers, a reminder of how much investment is still needed in training, safety, and fair working conditions.

As IRF President Chris Galliers puts it, this is a day to honour these quiet heroes and work together to improve their safety and recognition. Because if they don't protect our natural world, who will?

Protecting what matters most!

Today, on , we recognise the people, partnerships, and technology working tirelessly behind the scenes to protect one of Africa's greatest wilderness areas.

At the heart of these efforts is the Jock Environmental Monitoring Unit (JEMU). This dedicated, non-combative team patrols the concession and surrounding intensive protection zones using advanced technology, motion detection cameras, and daily field monitoring to provide vital intelligence that supports the protection of endangered wildlife.

Conservation is never achieved alone. We are proud to work alongside organisations that share our commitment to safeguarding South Africa's natural heritage, including South African National Parks, Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, Wilderness Foundation Africa, Wildlife Protection Solutions, EarthRanger, Contemplate Wild and SORAI

Together, these partnerships combine expertise, innovation, veterinary care, technology, and on-the-ground conservation to help protect vulnerable species and preserve the ecosystems they call home.
