Today we celebrate the ocean that connects us all.

This year’s focus highlights the importance of strong Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) – safeguarding the ecosystems, species and natural processes that sustain life both above and below the water’s surface.

At REWILDING SOUTHERN AFRICA, we’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of these protected spaces. From the release of rehabilitated sea turtles like Nori into the De Hoop Marine Protected Area, to the recovery of African penguins, kelp forests and coastal ecosystems, MPAs remain among the most effective tools for ocean conservation.

Our oceans regulate climate, support biodiversity, provide livelihoods and connect continents. Their future depends on the choices we make today.
