South Africa is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, hosting an exceptional range of ecosystems—from savannas and wetlands to forests, deserts, and one of the planet’s richest marine environments. It is home to the globally significant Cape Floristic Region, the smallest yet most diverse floral kingdom on Earth, with thousands of endemic plant species found nowhere else.

This biodiversity has faced centuries of pressure from agriculture, urban expansion, invasive species, and mining. In response, South Africa has become a global leader in Ecological Restoration, implementing large-scale programs such as Working for Water, which removes invasive plants while creating jobs, and expanding protected areas to restore and conserve ecosystems. Today, restoration efforts are closely tied to social development, making South Africa a pioneer in linking environmental recovery with economic opportunity.

🌱 The Green Wall of Algeria: Reviving the Legacy 🇩🇿

Spanning over 1,000 km, the Algerian Green Dam stands as one of Africa’s earliest large-scale responses to desertification.

Launched in the 1960s, this ambitious project set out to halt the advance of the Sahara by planting Aleppo pine and alfa grass across degraded land. Today, a new phase is breathing life into this historic effort:

âś… Reforesting 1.2 million hectares with diverse native and drought-tolerant species
âś… Integrating sustainable land use, livelihoods, and agroforestry
âś… Strengthening ecosystems and protecting communities from desert encroachment
âś… Combining traditional knowledge and modern ecological approaches

This isn't just about trees—it’s about climate resilience, food security, and environmental justice in one of the planet’s mo

Here are four compelling images showcasing the Algerian Green Dam restoration effort:

1. Green dam corridor in early reforestation areas—patchy greenery across Algerian steppe

2. Established green belt section—dense rows of Aleppo pine and native shrubs

3. Restored woodland patch beside arid terrain—illustrating the contrast of ecosystem recovery

4. Map and planting layout—visual showing the 1,000 km corridor stretching across Algeria

Let’s revive, reimagine, and restore the land together. 🌍🌾

🌍 AFR100: Scaling Landscape Restoration Across Africa

The African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100) is one of the continent’s most ambitious environmental efforts—backed by global support and local leadership.

With partners like FAO, WRI, GIZ, AUDA-NEPAD, and the EU, AFR100 is working with countries including:

🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of Congo
🇰🇪 Kenya
🇲🇬 Madagascar
🇲🇼 Malawi
🇹🇬 Togo
🇹🇿 Tanzania

🌱 What makes AFR100 powerful?

Agroforestry for sustainable land use

Forest management that protects biodiversity

Community empowerment at the heart of action

Blended finance to scale restoration for real impact

Alignment with the Bonn Challenge to restore 100 million ha in Africa by 2030

This is restoration that builds climate resilience, restores ecosystems, and uplifts rural livelihoods—one landscape at a time.

At SER Africa, we’re proud to support and spotlight the people and partnerships bringing degraded land back to life.

Here are four impactful images that illustrate the scale, community involvement, and ecological diversity of the AFR100 Landscape Restoration Initiative:

1. Restored landscapes with greening vegetation across African terrain.

2. Nursery operations showing seedling propagation for restoration across participating countries.
