Every child deserves access to life-saving care, today and for generations to come. ❤️

As the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital celebrates 70 years of changing and saving young lives, we’re looking to the future. The hospital’s dedicated paediatric neurosurgery unit relies on a neurosurgical microscope that is now 17 years old and urgently needs replacing.

The Children’s Hospital Trust is raising R7.8 million to fund a new microscope and ensure life-saving brain surgeries can continue for the next 70 years.

Help us honour this incredible legacy by investing in the future of paediatric healthcare. Donate today:

“Why nursing? Oh, that’s an easy one.”

Long before she stepped into the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital wearing a freshly starched white uniform at just 17, Penny knew she had found her purpose.

Today, at 78, her nursing days are over, but she still returns to the Hospital that she fell in love with so many years ago, and which she describes as a beacon of hope for children from across
the country and beyond.

From caring for generations of young patients to serving on the health facility board today, her story is a reminder that, across its 70-year history, the heart of the Red Cross has always been its compassionate, dedicated people; people powered by purpose.

When little Krêsna was diagnosed with Leukemia, life changed in an instant. For her mom, Betricia, the devastating news felt as though their whole world had crumbled. Suddenly, every day became a battle filled with uncertainty, fear, and difficult decisions.

Originally from George, Krêsna and Betricia face not only the emotional and physical challenges of treatment, but also the financial burden of travelling long distances for the specialised care Krêsna needs. The costs of transport and time away from home add to an already difficult journey.

Despite these challenges, they continue to face each day with courage, holding onto their faith, hope, and the power of prayer.

For 70 years, Red Cross Children’s Hospital has been a place of hope and healing for children like Krêsna and families like Betricia’s. As RCWMCH celebrate 70 Years of Hope and Healing, we invite you to help us continue changing lives for generations to come.

💙 Every contribution helps provide critical care and support services.

💙 Every act of generosity gives hope to a child in need.

Every year, children with life-threatening brain conditions arrive at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital needing urgent, highly specialised neurosurgery. But the neurosurgical microscope that makes many of these operations possible is now 17 years old, seven years beyond its recommended lifespan.

As the only dedicated paediatric neurosurgery unit in sub-Saharan Africa, the hospital performs some of the continent’s most complex brain surgeries. This single piece of equipment supports 40% of all neurosurgical procedures, including 120–150 high-risk operations every year.

Without a new microscope, life-saving surgeries for children cannot continue at the level they are needed.

The Children’s Hospital Trust is urgently raising R7.8 million to replace this critical equipment and ensure that children across South Africa and beyond continue to receive the specialist care they deserve.

👉 Please donate and help fund a new neurosurgical microscope that will save lives, restore hope, and secure the future of paediatric brain surgery.

Congratulations Dr Selome Robi Tsige! 🙌🏼

What better way to end the week than to celebrate Dr Selome Robi Tsige qualifying as a neonatologist. The second paediatrician from Hawassa University College Of Medicine And Health Sciences to do so, she follows in the footsteps of her mentor, APFP alum Dr Fitsum Belay. Having just passed her College of Medicine of South Africa subspecialty exams, she has returned home to add her expertise to Hawassa's neonatal service and teaching. If you're looking for inspiration - go check out their remarkable work. Dear Selome - giant heart, effervescent giggle, feisty as anything, neonatologist to your very core - congratulations! We could not be more thrilled! Halalala!
