For six-year-old Owam and her grandmother, Eunice, it also means having food on the table, clothes to wear and transport to get to hospital appointments.

After losing her son, Eunice has been caring for her granddaughter while supporting their family on her social grant. Through our Family Care Project, they receive practical support that helps ease the daily pressures of caring for a child who needs medical care.

Do you remember Layla's story? ♥️🎥

After a devastating burn accident, Layla’s journey to recovery meant long trips from Ceres to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, bringing emotional strain and travel costs that weighed heavily on her family.

In this video, Sr Nadine Saunders, Operations Manager in Ceres Hospital’s Trauma Unit, shares an update on Layla’s healing journey, and the difference that care closer to home is making.

Strengthening this care also means supporting the people who provide it. At a collaborative workshop in Worcester hosted by The Harry Crossley Children's Nursing Development Unit, healthcare professionals, partners and stakeholders came together to share knowledge and improve children’s journeys through the healthcare system.

Did You Know That Two Days’ Pay Helped Seed a Children’s Hospital? 🕊️

The Children’s Hospital Trust’s Annual Day of Remembrance is a significant occasion honouring the South African servicemen and World War II veterans whose generosity helped establish the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

After returning home from the Second World War, these veterans each donated two days of their pay to seed the establishment of a dedicated children’s hospital, a living memorial that would bring hope and healing to generations of children. 🪖🧳

Their extraordinary act of generosity laid the foundation for what has become a world-class paediatric healthcare facility, providing specialist care to more than 300,000 children every year. Each child who receives care at the Hospital is part of the enduring legacy created by these founding heroes.

Taking place on 7 November 2026, the Annual Day of Remembrance will bring together military dignitaries, community leaders, supporters and friends of the Hospital to reflect on its outstanding history and pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice and selflessness that made it possible. ♥️

Two days of their pay helped seed a hospital. Their legacy continues to save children’s lives.
