WORLD PLUMBING DAY – MARCH 11

Today, Plumbing Professionals SA (PPSA) joins the global community in recognising the essential role plumbers play in protecting public health, water quality, and sanitation systems.

The theme, Plumbing Connects the World, reminds us that plumbing is far more than pipes and fittings. It connects communities to safe drinking water, protects sanitation systems, and supports the infrastructure that modern society depends on.

Behind every functioning home, hospital, school, and business is a network of plumbing systems designed to safeguard health and dignity.

But plumbing also carries responsibility.

Professional plumbing must protect not only individual properties, but also the municipal water and sanitation infrastructure that serves entire communities.

At PPSA, we believe that professionalism in plumbing must always be linked to accountability and compliance.

That is why we continue to promote:

ASK FOR REGISTRATION
Compliance with municipal Water By-laws
Proper documentation and notification of plumbing work
Qualified workmanship that protects public health and water systems

In South Africa, local municipalities acting as Water Services Authorities play a critical role in safeguarding water services through municipal water by-laws and compliance oversight.

When plumbing work is performed responsibly and in accordance with regulations, it helps maintain the integrity of our water services and strengthens trust in the profession.

Plumbers are not only tradespeople, they are custodians of public health and water safety.🇿🇦PPSA👨‍🏫

Plumbing professionalism is often discussed in terms of compliance, but it’s important to understand what compliance actually means in practice.

Municipal water bylaws place specific legal duties on plumbers, such as:

Being properly qualified and registered where required
Applying the correct plumbing standards
Notifying the Water Services Authority of certain installations and replacements

Inspection and enforcement, however, are municipal functions.
They may vary between municipalities and over time.

Professionalism is therefore not measured by how often inspections occur, but by whether:

The work is done lawfully.
The correct process is followed
A clear record (notification) exists

Notification protects:
Property owners
Municipal water infrastructure
Qualified plumbers themselves

Even when enforcement is inconsistent, documenting and notifying work remains a professional obligation and an important safeguard.

This is the principle behind ASK FOR REGISTRATION — promoting accountability, traceability, and public health protection, not blame or gatekeeping.

2026: A YEAR OF COMPLIANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY

As we enter 2026, it’s time for a reset.
Plumbing directly affects water quality, public health, and safety. Inconsistent enforcement does not remove legal responsibility, compliance remains mandatory.

What 2026 stands for:
Use qualified, registered plumbers
Notify the Water Services Authority where required
No inspection is not an excuse
Document and notify, paper trails protect everyone

Homeowners:

Ask for registration.
Ask if the work will be notified to the municipality.

Plumbers:

Professionalism means accountability.
If the by-law requires notification, notify.

ASK FOR REGISTRATION

Plumbing work affects drinking water quality, sanitation, and public health. It is not just a private matter between a homeowner and a contractor.

In South Africa, certain municipalities, including Cape Town, require the involvement of a registered, qualified plumber for specific plumbing work in line with municipal water bylaws and the Water Services Act.

The ASK FOR REGISTRATION campaign is a public awareness initiative by Plumbing Professionals SA (PPSA) to remind property owners and stakeholders that responsible plumbing work must be linked to accountability and municipal oversight.

This campaign is about:
Public health protection
Water infrastructure safety
Professional responsibility

One simple question can make a difference:
Are you registered with the municipality?

Promoting plumbing professionalism, compliance, and public health awareness.

END OF YEAR MESSAGE –SA PLUMBING

As 2025 comes to an end, many plumbing businesses have closed for the festive season, others are spending time at home, and many are preparing for a well-deserved break.

This pause gives us time to reflect.
The past year has been challenging for the plumbing industry in South Africa —from rising costs and business closures to ongoing confusion around compliance and standards.

Yet plumbing remains essential.
It protects public health, water infrastructure, and our communities.

And to every plumber, business owner, and service provider:
We wish you and your families a safe and peaceful festive season.
May the new year bring clarity, stability, and real progress for our industry.

Let us return next year ready for change —ready to raise standards and protect our profession.

Professionalism first. Compliance always.
Time for Change.🇿🇦PPSA

TIME FOR CHANGE

Being qualified is not a title — it is a responsibility.
It means:
Understanding the law

Following standards fully, not partially
Accepting inspection, testing, and accountability
Protecting consumers, infrastructure, and water resources

Plumbers are frontline custodians of water.
Every incorrect installation contributes to:
Water losses
Contamination risks
System failures
Legal and financial consequences

Professionalism is no longer optional.
Compliance is no longer negotiable.
Silence is no longer acceptable.

Time for change means choosing integrity over convenience.
Time for change means raising the standard — together.🇿🇦PPSA
