May she RIP xx

With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future.

In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world.

The Jane Goodall Institute is incredibly grateful to all our supporters, partners, and friends, especially during this difficult time. To add a personal remembrance of Dr. Goodall and continue her legacy for future generations, please visit JaneGoodall.org/RememberingJane

‼️Audacity to blame baboons‼️

Communities having the audacity to blame Baboons for being in the Urban Area, and this is how certain businesses practice waste management.

Again there will be no consequences as enforcement by the Authority that is tasked with enforcement is non-existant.

11 months after adoption of a Baboon Management Plan by Authorities, after service of a Letter of Demand and service of a Court Application for implementation of 24 year old solutions, i.e. Baboon proof bins, Law Enforcement.

This is not an Urban Baboon Program or a Baboon Management Plan "BMP" issue, this is a normal waste management issue. The excuse of a BMP implementation is just that, an excuse.

Enforcement of Bylaws in respect of reckless waste generators is not dependent on a BMP.

Baboons are becoming habituated due to reckless waste generators and an Authority that is unable to supply an effective Baboon proof bin or enforcement of the penalty provisions of its own Bylaws.

The AUDACITY to blame a wild animal is disingenuous!

Let us then also blame birds, caracal, rats and mice and any other wild animal that is attracted to our waste due to the fact that we cannot secure same and there are no consequences for not doing so.

We live next to a National Park and enjoy the mountain walks and views. Some of us even generate an income from it. With this said, living here comes with a responsibility not only for us but also the Authorities.

Don't make your negligence and omissions cause the death of the baboons or any other wildlife.

Video in comments. ‼️

Such a gorgeous boy 💔

A strikingly handsome tranquil baboon called Van Damme (WF8) was captured and put down yesterday by SPCA who found his injuries from a dominance fight severe enough to warrant the end of his life. While under their care X-rays taken revealed that in addition to these wounds, he had suffered up to 15 penetrating pellet gun wounds that had lodged in his abdomen, both legs, buttocks, chest, and arms and with a large calibre pellet lodged in his ear canal.

Van Damme, became known to many and even if the encounter was brief left a lasting impression of being gentle and respectful.

VD, naturally dispersed in 2020 when rivalry amongst siblings Bolo, Nomahlehle and him clearly defined his position in the troop . Struggling with a severe thigh tear from the brothers he sought out the sanctuary of East dockyard before healing and moving south. He moved in to Smits without a qualm. Philemon was nursing an injured shoulder and possibly realised VD was not vying a position of such incredible responsibility as alpha.
Once Philemon was dispatched by the authorities VD being a big loveable adult male became “alpha” of Smits troop.
A very relaxed alpha who had few expectations and would sometimes go walkabout on his own. It was truly in the last year that VD - matured into his position and cherished his family a great deal. A cumbersome collar definitely depleted his quality of life as did a tenacious rival which drove him to seek sanctuary around Seaforth and the East dockyard again.

Sadly, we bid this incredible character farewell and may he rest in peace.
