Declared by the United Nations General Assembly, this day serves as a reminder to promote peace within and among all nations and peoples through a 24-hour period of non-violence and ceasefire.

It was created in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), UNESCO’s dance committee, to promote dance as a universal art form that crosses cultural, political, and ethnic barriers.

The day also commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the French choreographer often considered the “father of modern ballet.”
