I am Portia Mogoshadi Debeila the CEO of many small businesses but above all, close to my heart is Mogoshadi Mphela Projects trading as Mogoshadi Laundromat.
They say cleanliness is next to godliness. Our company was established in 2017. I am the 1st in my family of six girls and we all know in our African Culture that the first thing after waking up is cleaning the house😂😂😂 and as a bigger sister I was the one who was doing most of the house chores, that’s where the love of laundry and cleaning services came from💞.
I started working as a Data Capturer at the Aurum Institute in Mecklenburg Hospital in 2014, that’s when i saw the gap of not having the laundry around Moroke Village and the surrounding areas. After doing the research and checking if my idea will work as most people are renting out within the area and working at the mines, we emerged.
2017 We put the idea into action and started to run with one washing machine, Iron and a dryer. As I was still employed at that time, I employed one lady to work as a laundry attendant and over weekends I would go and work with her, it was hard work. It was not easy as I didn’t understand how to market the business as it was my first time in entrepreneurship. The first month was not bad as we managed to make profit to pay for rent, employee and buying detergents. 😂Trust me I didn’t even know the difference between laundry liquid and washing powder.
Guidance from family and friends helped me to make it through 2017. Then 2018 the place we rented increased the rent and we decided to move out and rent the space somewhere else. 2020 December the second place we rented, gave us notice to move out. The reason for that was never told. I suspect they thought we were making money💰 🤣
When joining the Circle of Hope page on Facebook I did not know what it was all about until I attended one of their Events in Thaba Moshate and that event opened so many doors and gave me more information about entrepreneurial activities and I just wanted to do everything. I added the kiddies decor for another income stream. I wanted to be a full time entrepreneur as my employment contract was coming to an end. I added tekkie wash, house cleaning and upholstery services in 2020 and the company grew bit by bit, hiring at least 2 members at the time. We now employ 8.
I started to understand the importance of paperwork and compliance in business. In 2023 I got the once off big order from the mine and that opened my eyes 👀 and I realised that there are opportunities for women at the mines and in our area.
My biggest challenge was when the machines stopped working and I would first open them before calling someone to fix them, the super woman syndrome😂 then I would have delayed service to my clients, now I know I can't do everything I need people who specialise in those areas.
The other challenge is our business is now growing and we need space and advanced machinery. We wish to service bigger businesses, lodges, hotels, employ more trained cleaners to place in different companies 🙌❤️

We added the sale of Atchar in our business. Yoooo hai actually we do everything that is doable and that does not interfere with our core business. Atchaar is doing well in our area we now supply the Supermarkets in Moroke along R37 road. We deliver up to Burgersfort now.

To the ladies who are scared to start something, the idea that you have today, never think it’s not going to work, you also don't know if it will succeed, just start, trust me it will. I personally have seen many ideas that I implemented boom, so be encouraged.
