- A scholarship programme for high quality boarding school
- A blended online school in partnership with UCT OHS

A number of other initiatives, ranging from nutrition and food, healthcare, mentoring, sports, arts and culture, and family counselling provide needed peripheral support to the children’s families to ensure their educational success.

This International Women’s Day, we reflect on the power of women who open doors, share their stories, and inspire the next generation to dream boldly.
Earlier this year, the Imbeleko Foundation hosted its first-ever Matric Valediction Ceremony for the Class of 2025; a special milestone that marks the beginning of our scholars’ transition from high school into their university journey.

The valediction forms part of our university readiness programme, preparing our matric learners before they attend our annual camp and formally enter the Imbeleko University Support Programme.

We were honoured to be joined by Ms Thabile Dube, a seasoned FMCG leader who currently serves as Franchise Operations Director at Coca-Cola South Africa. Born on the outskirts of Hlabisa, KwaZulu-Natal, Ms Dube shared her powerful journey with our
scholars, one shaped by resilience, discipline, and an unwavering belief that education can transform lives.

An MBA graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Ms Dube spoke openly about her path, encouraging our scholars to remain focused, courageous, and intentional about their futures - to be DREAMERS!

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honour women like Ms Dube who continue to inspire young people, especially young women to rise, lead, and create meaningful change in their communities.

Camp Highlight | A 9-Year Journey of Readiness

For the ninth year running, we hosted Imbeleko’s Annual Pre-University Camp - a moment of pause between what has been achieved and what lies ahead.

Our University Preparedness Programme is a nine-month journey, beginning in March of the matric year through the Gradesmatch application process. Learners are guided to translate results into realistic post-school pathways - aligning subjects, marks, interests, and funding. It is often where uncertainty becomes clarity.

The journey culminates in January with our Valediction, before learners enter the two-day Pre-University Camp - intentionally designed to prepare them for more than academics. At Imbeleko, we know access alone is not enough. Transition requires confidence, self-awareness, and community.

This year’s cohort brought together learners from:
• Our Afterschool Programme across five KwaNyuswa
high schools
• Our Boarding School Scholarships Programme
• Partnerships with Vukuzakhe High School and
Thinabantu Foundation

The camp was re-curated with Traversing Liminality, led by a team of TL alumni (including Imbeleko alumni and staff), shaping a programme grounded in the real social and academic transitions our learners face.

The camp also marked the transition into our University Support Programme, where learners continue to receive academic, psychosocial, and wellbeing support throughout their higher-education journey.

We extend our gratitude to:
• Zodwa, TL alumna and Lead Facilitator
• Siphesihle, TL alumna, who led “What You Don’t Know
Will Kill You” - grounding learners in knowledge as
agency

There is something powerful about alumni returning. At Imbeleko, those who have walked the path come back to guide, build, and hold responsibility.

Thank you to our all-alumni team:
• Our University Scholars, the Shange Twins
• S’nothando, who held the Health segment with care
• Our internal team - Samkelisiwe, Ntokozo, and
Londiwe Zwane

This camp reflects what becomes possible when schools, organisations, alumni, and communities move together. Pathways become clearer. Transitions become less fragile. Futures become possible.

To our Matric Class of 2025 - this is not an ending.
It is the beginning.

We walk with you.

The start of the year at Imbeleko is always a moment of deep pride and celebration. It marks the official close of a chapter for each Matric Class and every single year - our Dreamers rise to the occasion and make us incredibly proud.

These results reflect the hard work, discipline, and commitment of learners from our Boarding School Scholarship Programme, as well as learners from five local partner schools in KwaNyuswa supported through our Academy’s strictly STEM Afterschool Programme; alongside the unwavering dedication of our team and partners.

The results speak for themselves:
• 100% pass rate
• 99% Bachelor pass rate
• 82+ distinctions
• 33 learners achieving an average above 80%

We are immensely proud of our Matric Class and deeply thankful to the partners and communities who walk this journey with us.

We are especially grateful to our partner, Gradesmatch, for making the journey from matric to university clearer and less daunting for our learners. By matching results to the right courses and guiding learners through university, bursary, and scholarship applications, you have removed uncertainty, opened doors, and given our Dreamers confidence in their next steps. Your support has made a real and lasting difference.

This collaboration has enabled Imbeleko to scale our University Preparedness Programme beyond the Valley to other communities in KwaZulu-Natal, strengthening long-standing partnerships with Vukuzakhe High School and Thinabantu Foundation, and reaching:

• Top 15 learners from Vukuzakhe High School
• 27 learners from Pietermaritzburg townships and rural
areas, enrolled at Edendale Technical High School,
Emzamweni High School, Georgetown High School,
and Amakholwa Secondary School.

We’re celebrating the Intern Training (ICT) journey within our Skills Development Programme

Throughout 2025, interns across our YES and FP&M SETA programmes took part in hands-on, future-ready training designed to build confidence and prepare them for the modern workplace.

This year’s training highlights included:
• Introduction to Computing & Networks
• Google Workspace Applications
• Data Management Essentials

From learning new tech skills to collaborating, problem-solving, and growing together, these sessions were about more than just training. They were about confidence gained, teamwork strengthened, and young people stepping closer to their professional futures.

As we get ready to scale this work through our upcoming Higher Education & Skills Hub, this foundation remains at the heart of what we do - equipping young people with the tools, support, and opportunities to lead, innovate, and thrive.

Here’s to growth, progress, and bright futures ahead.

As 2025 comes to a close, Imbeleko Foundation reflects with deep gratitude on how our internship partnerships have grown and strengthened over the year

Through two distinct internship pathways, we have had the privilege of walking alongside young people as they transition from education into the world of work:
• Youth Employment Service (YES) internships,
administered through our partnership with SA youth at WORK, and
• FP&M SETA Graduate Internships, implemented
through our partnership with the KwaZulu- Natal Education Trust

While these are separate programmes with different funders and governance structures, together they have enabled Imbeleko to become more than a host organisation. We have become a learning space, a place of belonging, and a bridge between education and employment.

Throughout the year, interns were placed across education, wellness, agriculture, data, security, and operations - both within our head office and across ten (10) rural schools. Some arrived unsure of themselves. Others came with big dreams but limited experience. Over time, confidence grew, skills strengthened, and purpose began to take shape.

To date, Imbeleko has hosted:
• 88 YES4Youth interns (2020–2025)
• 40BankSETA Graduate Interns (2022-2024)
• 26 FP&M SETA interns (2025 to 2027)

In 2025, we are currently supporting:
• 20 YES interns, and
• 26 FP&M SETA graduate interns.

Behind these numbers is real impact:
• 60% of interns transition into permanent employment
• 20% continue with further studies
• 30% return to Imbeleko as staff, mentors, or
programme leaders

Adding to this impact, two Imbeleko YES alumni have been recognised as YES Top 35 Under 35 in two consecutive years - a powerful reflection of the leadership and talent emerging from these pathways.

These partnerships do more than support programmes. They open doors and change lives.

As the year draws to a close, Imbeleko extends sincere thanks to every partner who believes in young people and the importance of their work-readiness - thus continue to show up for their futures.

2025 BLAP Year in Review.

What a dynamic year for afterschool learning across our partner schools. In 2025, Imbeleko Foundation’s Blended Learning Afterschool Programme supported primary and secondary school learners through a holistic model that strengthens literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century skills, while actively supporting classroom teaching.

BLAP was designed to complement teachers’ work. Learners engaged with CAPS-aligned content through practical, hands-on activities that helped concepts make sense. In English, learners explored visual literacy by analysing adverts and creating their own. These sessions supported class teachers directly and contributed to improved learner participation and stronger test performance.

Across the year, between 65 and 70 percent of learners showed measurable improvement in English, with average gains of 10 to 15 percentage points in comprehension and written tasks. In Mathematics, 60 to 68 percent of learners improved their performance, with average gains of 8 to 12 percentage points, particularly in foundational skills and problem-solving.

At primary school level, the programme focused on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy through play-based and cooperative learning approaches. At secondary school level, BLAP reinforced literacy and numeracy while opening pathways into STEM through Natural Sciences, AI tools, robotics exposure, and targeted revision.

Our 2025 reach included
• 8 primary schools supporting 480 learners in Grades
6 and 7
• 5 high schools supporting 400 learners in Grades 8
and 9
• 13 schools reached through a consistent afterschool
model

BLAP also created meaningful opportunities for facilitators, mentors, and graduate youth. Through our Training Hub, educators received continuous professional development, curriculum support, wellness training, and digital skills coaching, strengthening both programme quality and educator growth.

This programme is about more than afterschool lessons. Children gain confidence, skills, and academic momentum. Teachers receive practical support that reinforces classroom learning. Youth and educators build experience, purpose, and pathways into education and community leadership.

This is what future-focused, community-rooted learning looks like, and we are proud of what was built together in 2025.
Thank you to our learners, facilitators, schools, and partners for making it possible.

2025 TaRL Year in Review; What a Year!

What a powerful year for foundational learning in KwaXimba and KwaNyuswa! In partnership with the Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) and The Learning Trust (SEF), we launched the Primary School Afterschool Catch-Up Programme, reaching more schools, more learners, and more young people from our own communities.

Working with ALP, we supported Grade 4–6 learners through focused Numeracy and mother-tongue bilingual literacy sessions. The goal was simple: help children close learning gaps, gain confidence, and feel capable again in the classroom - and we saw it happening.

With support from SEF, the programme also opened doors for local youth. Young facilitators, mentors, and food handlers were trained and placed in schools, gaining skills, experience, and a sense of purpose while giving back to their own communities. SEF covered youth stipends, making this model possible.

Our 2025 Reach:
• 10 primary schools across KwaXimba & KwaNyuswa
• 600 learners receiving targeted learning support
• 20 youth facilitators and 2 mentors trained and active
• Ongoing coaching and support from the ALP team

Facilitators and mentors received hands-on training in TaRL methods, learner assessment, classroom management, and engagement - ensuring children were supported by confident, capable young leaders from day one.

This programme is about more than afterschool lessons. It’s about lifting two generations at once:
• Children get the support they need to learn, catch up,
and thrive.
• Youth gain skills, income, and pathways into
education and community leadership.

This is what community-led change looks like, and we’re proud of what we’ve built together.

Here’s to the learners, the youth, the schools, and our partners who made it all possible

At Imbeleko Foundation, we celebrate leaders whose expertise, compassion, and vision enrich the educational journeys of our young people. Today, we highlight Ms Milanda Gumede, our Head of English, whose path into education reflects a deep commitment to literacy, empowerment, and academic excellence.

Ms Gumede joined the Imbeleko family after years of diverse teaching, leadership, and curriculum development experience across both South Africa and abroad. She has taught English internationally using global curricula, including the Cambridge curriculum, which strengthened her understanding of high-quality language instruction, assessment standards, and learner-centred pedagogies.

Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Social Science (English Language & Literature and Philosophy) from University of Cape Town (UCT), a PGCE, and extensive professional development in curriculum design, inclusive education, online learning, and academic coordination. Before stepping into her role at Imbeleko, she taught English abroad, worked across multiple international school environments, and gained hands-on experience with multicultural classrooms and differentiated instruction.

Upon returning to South Africa, she served in strategic education leadership roles. She oversaw the development and testing of a digital learning platform. Her work included managing software developers and service providers, leading curriculum development, designing learner user-experiences, coordinating funders and partners, and supporting recruitment and outreach efforts to ensure programme growth and sustainability.

She later advanced in her journey, where she led key academic and organisational initiatives. Her responsibilities included developing fundraising and partnership strategies, supporting academic staff through effective resource procurement, and managing university-preparation pathways for senior students. She coordinated Cambridge and SAT exam candidates, provided career guidance, and oversaw major projects connected to post-school opportunities. In addition, she supported organisational recruitment through events, social media strategy, website management, and coordinated detailed reporting to funders and stakeholders.

Today, as Head of English at Imbeleko Foundation, Ms Gumede oversees English curriculum delivery, academic quality, and programme development across our literacy, CAPS-aligned, and high school English initiatives. She leads the design of workbooks, assessments, and after-school academic programmes, while mentoring facilitators through effective pedagogy, inclusive practice, and strong language teaching strategies.

Driven by a belief that literacy is the foundation of opportunity, she is passionate about empowering rural learners to become confident readers, critical thinkers, and powerful storytellers. Ms Gumede’s long-term mission is to broaden access to high-quality English education, strengthen academic pathways, and nurture the next generation of scholars, writers, and leaders.

We are honoured to have her shaping the future of English literacy at Imbeleko and contributing to our vision of academic excellence for every learner.
