Left hand shake
When you shake hands with another Cub, Scout, Rover, your Pack Scouters, Troop Scouters, or any members of the worldwide Scout movement, you shake hands with your left hand.

Many years ago, Lord Baden-Powell met an African chief who held out his left hand in greeting. The chief explained to B-P that warriors fought with spears and carried shields in their left hand for protection. If a warrior met a friend, however, he would not need his shield, and his left hand would be free. So if a man held out his left hand to you it showed that he trusted you and wanted to be friendly. This impressed B-P so much that he chose the special handshake for Cubs and Scouts.

Every year, the SCOUTS SA annual badge recognises elements of our programmes, our national challenges, or the events we are commemorating.

๐Ÿ’œโšœThis year will be a very busy year for us, and so the 2026 annual badge reflects a number of key elements:

๐Ÿ‘‰The 'green' Africa celebrates the commitment of SCOUTS South Africaโ€™s members in building a greener, more sustainable Africa through the many Scouts for SDGs initiatives around the country.๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ‘‰By placing Africa at the centre, we also want to highlight the upcoming Africa events that we are hosting in 2026, namely Africa Scout Day and the 2nd Africa Scout Moot.โšœ

๐Ÿ‘‰The Scout scarf tied with a friendship knot represents the friendships and bonds formed through Scouting, both locally and internationally.๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘‰The orange colour pays tribute to Africa Scout Day, which we are hosting in March 2026. The hybrid event will combine international friendship, sharing of skills and experiences, and programmes-on-a-plate for Groups to run throughout the continent. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Some scenes from our recent home camp:
How absolutely blessed are we at St. Croix Sea Scouts to have all of this in our own back yard?

The Scouts camped at their own hall for a change, learning about the basics of good camping: managing hygiene, cooking and tidiness.

Our chef Neo prepared a spectacular sheba for a heritage style dinner.
TS Sahi ended the evening off with our indoor campfire and developing some new songs for St.Croix.

Next morning, with glorious weather, we just had to take a short hike up the escarpment trail behind our hall to catch a view of the glorious estuary with all it's birdlife and of course, the river mouth.

The Scouting spirit is growing stronger and stronger here as well gear up for our AGM and another great year in the bag!

We're proud of all our Eastern Cape South - Scouts at St.Croix!

๐ŸŒฟ St. Croix Sea Scouts Celebrate Our Heritage!

As part of Scouts South Africaโ€™s , our St. Croix Sea Scouts took action to protect and celebrate โ€” by creating a beautiful Indigenous Garden at the historic Main Library in Port Elizabeth.

Working hand-in-hand with the Historical Society of Port Elizabeth, the Friends of the Main Library, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and the Zwartkops Conservancy, our Eastern Cape South - Scouts rescued and replanted indigenous species like Aloes, Euphorbia, and Gasteria bicolor โ€” bringing life, colour, and sustainability back to this landmark heritage site.

The plants were all rescued from Coega, where they would otherwise be destroyed and bulldozed for industrial development.

This project is part of โ€™s nationwide effort to empower young people through service, conservation, and community pride โ€” building real and taking action for the planet under . ๐ŸŒ

The library and our city share the common theme of sea and maritime connection, and we are thrilled to have had a hand in improving the inner city for all citizens.
The sign erected explains to visitors what the Sea Scouts have done and why, and gives interesting information about the biodiversity of of our area.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud of our Scouts for showing what looks like in action โ€” preserving history, protecting nature, and inspiring others to do the same. ๐Ÿ’š

Another exciting evening at St St. Croix Sea Scouts !
A going up ceremony, and a brand new Scout investiture on the same evening.

Then straight into learning some camping skills and hacks.

Sleeping bags were rolled, backpacks analyzed, and we took a look at some campfire blankets.

Soon many of our Scouts will be making their own (ready to carry all their badges and patches!)

Heritage Day 2025, the long-awaited Orienteering Challenge took place!

An hour before, the heavens opened up and treated us to a proper shower- 10 mins before, we were treated to blue skies and glorious sunshine (for a while ๐Ÿ˜)

Some serious planning took place, snack packs were grabbed, and it was go-time.
Racing around Bluewater Bay and Amsterdamhoek as well as the escarpment route of the Aloe reserve, to get back to St. Croix Sea Scouts Hall on time.

8 control points, all with some historical significance were set up for this Orienteering Challenge.

A super congratulations to all participants for upholding Scouting standards in their conduct throughout the event, and for doing so very well in the challenge itself.

The points came down to the wire in the end, with a very close 1st 2nd and 3rd place.
'Adventure Time's from St.Croix took home 1st place, the trophy, and a R350 Takealot voucher.

We'd like to acknowledge every participant and every volunteer who gave up most of their public holiday to be there and make this event so special.
We had a great time hosting it, and you are all doing Eastern Cape South - Scouts proud.
