Plans are taking shape to introduce more indigenous trees to Westdene Park in Bloemfontein, with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and Free State National Botanical Garden approached to assist with the greening initiative.
The area in front of Bien Donné has been identified as the starting point for the project, which aims to gradually create a greener and more inviting public space in the neighbourhood.
The initiative comes at a particularly fitting time for tree planting in South Africa. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment officially launched the Presidential One Billion Trees Programme in May this year in partnership with SANBI and other stakeholders. The national programme encourages municipalities, businesses, organisations and communities to participate in tree planting as part of efforts to improve climate resilience and restore the environment.
Importantly, the national programme places emphasis on planting trees that are appropriate for their local environment. According to the department, species are selected according to climatic conditions and agro-ecological zones, with researchers and specialists providing input to improve their chances of surviving and thriving.
That makes the involvement of SANBI and the Free State National Botanical Garden particularly relevant. SANBI manages South Africa's network of national botanical gardens and promotes the conservation of the country's indigenous plant diversity. Its 2026 National Gardens Week campaign also highlighted restoration and the importance of indigenous plants in supporting local biodiversity.
The Westdene initiative could therefore do more than simply add greenery to the park. Establishing suitable indigenous trees can contribute to a healthier urban environment while creating shade and improving the long-term character of a community green space.
The proposed planting in front of Bien Donné is intended to be the starting point of the greening process, rather than a once-off planting project.
