On 28 May 2026,
the Eco-Champions of Ntumediseng Secondary School conducted an Environmental Awareness Campaign aimed at identifying issues that negatively impact the environment, pose health risks, and potentially cause physical harm to learners and staff.

During the campaign, several concerns were identified within the school environment. Learners highlighted the urgent need for proper pavement, as the school grounds become muddy and difficult to access during rainy weather. It was also noted that classrooms require regular cleaning to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.

In addition, old and broken furniture placed outside classrooms was identified as a safety hazard, especially during learners’ recreational activities. Some of the damaged desks and furniture can be collected by recycling companies for repurposing and environmental sustainability initiatives.

The Eco-Champions further raised concerns regarding long-standing sewage leakages on the school premises. The unpleasant odor, particularly during hot weather conditions, creates discomfort and affects breathing, posing serious environmental and health concerns.

Despite these challenges, the school renovation process currently underway is showing promising progress and brings hope for improved learning conditions in the near future.

As a way forward, the concerns raised by learners will be formally communicated to the school principal, and follow-up engagements will be conducted to ensure that meaningful action and positive change are achieved.

Eco-Champions at Kgorathuto Secondary School, located in Section D, Botshabelo, Free State, recently conducted an environmental and safety awareness campaign aimed at identifying hazards that may pose health and safety risks to learners and staff.
During the campaign, several critical concerns were identified within the school environment. The JoJo tanks, which are intended to serve as alternative and backup water storage systems, were found to be damaged and improperly positioned. Sports facilities were also reported to be unsafe and not user-friendly due to the presence of potholes and deteriorating grounds.
In addition, leaking taps have made access to clean water difficult for learners. Classroom conditions remain poor, with broken windows and doors, as well as non-functional electricity, exposing learners to unfavorable cold weather conditions. Broken chairs and damaged desk frames were also identified and require urgent recycling or replacement. Furthermore, the state of the school toilets was found to be unsuitable for human use and in need of immediate intervention.
As a resolution, the Eco-Champions resolved to formally write a letter of concern to the school principal and engage relevant government departments to assist in addressing the identified challenges and improving the learning environment.
