⚡ Building Skills for a Just Energy Transition

SHE in Energy Africa, in partnership with DESTEA, hosted a successful Solar Energy Training in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, with students from Goldfields TVET College. While many participants had a foundational understanding of solar energy, the session revealed not only important knowledge gaps particularly around the business and socio-economic aspects of renewable energy but also a deep curiosity and eagerness to learn more about the industry. At the same time, there was a shared sense of frustration among students and community members who see large-scale renewable projects in their regions such as the Daamlagte Solar Project near Parys and the Sonvanger Solar Project in Theunissen yet feel disconnected from the opportunities these projects bring.

This sentiment reinforces the urgent need for greater awareness and education on:
🔹 How renewable projects are structured and financed
🔹 What socio-economic benefits they deliver
🔹 How local communities can meaningfully participate

Too often, misinformation, language barriers, and technical jargon create a gap between the industry and the very people it aims to uplift.
At SHE in Energy Africa, we believe real transformation begins with knowledge, access, and inclusion. Our mission is to ensure that communities are not just spectators, but active participants in South Africa’s clean energy future.

This is right up our alley at SHE in Energy Africa, with skills development at the core of our heart.

We are honoured to have received this invite from the Free State Department of Higher Education & Training/Motheo TVET College, with myself as one of the speakers to what is not only an important but necessary dialogue, and hope to make a meaningful contribution.

It looks like women's month festivities are still continuing at DFFE and DESTEA, with an all female presenters for what was an insightful two days where SHE in Energy Africa attended and participated in the Consultative Workshop for National Climate Change Information System.

Indeed, when women come together as a collective incredible things happen💚

SHE in Energy Africa attended and participated at the eventful Northern Cape (Kimberly) Mining and Energy Conference 2023.

Skills development and unemployment which are intertwined, was our biggest concern at the conference with the Northern Cape' unemployment rate currently sitting at 22.1%, a reflection of incongruency in the skills development, current and previous investment opportunities in the province which boasts high renewable energy projects across a range of clean energy technologies, including solar, wind and hydro.

The grid capacity constraints also dominated the discussions and rightfully so, as the Northern Cape currently has a zero grid available capacity.

Notwithstanding the economic challenges in the province, the Northern Cape still holds great potential as South Africa' investment hub in energy and mining and well done the provincial government for hosting a well organised event.

P.S The fireside chat all male panel was also the elephant in the room to which Dr Zwanani Titus Mathe apologised.

"Unless South Africa got its skills development on par with the expansion of the renewable energy sector, the country would become a consumer of what other countries were developing, as had been the case with many African countries, she pointed out".

The accurate determination of skills demand is becoming increasingly important as South Africa rolls out more renewable energy projects and transitions its energy system.
