IMATU - 30 Years of Leadership, Service and Solidarity

Today we celebrate a proud milestone, 30 years of the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union .

On 8 March 1996, IMATU was founded on a bold vision: to establish a strong, independent and democratic trade union that would protect and advance the rights of employees in the local government sector. Over the past three decades, that vision has grown into a powerful reality.

For 30 years, IMATU has stood firmly on the side of municipal workers. Through collective bargaining, legal representation, professional development and dedicated member support, our Union has worked tirelessly to ensure that those who serve our communities are treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

Municipal employees play a vital role in the daily lives of South Africans. They keep our towns functioning, deliver essential services, and support the wellbeing of communities across the country. IMATU is proud to represent these committed men and women who work every day, often under difficult conditions, to make local government work.

This anniversary is more than a celebration of time. It is a celebration of people. It honours the thousands of members, shop stewards, officials and leaders whose dedication, courage and solidarity have built IMATU into the respected and influential organisation it is today. Their commitment has strengthened our Union and ensured that the voice of municipal employees continues to be heard.

As we reflect on the past 30 years, we also look ahead. The challenges facing local government and its workforce remain significant, but so too is IMATU’s resolve. We remain guided by the principles that have defined our journey, namely independence, fairness, professionalism and service to our members.

Together we have built a strong foundation. Together we will continue to protect workers, strengthen local government, and build a better future for all our members.

Thank you to every IMATU member for being part of this remarkable journey.

IMATU – 30 years of working together for you!
