PHAKAMA FOLLOWS UP ON BOTHA SIGCAU BUILDING FIRE

Following the fire at the Botha Sigcau Building in Mthatha on 27 March 2026, Phakama Eastern Cape Civic Organisation continues to pursue accountability and transparency around this incident.

After our earlier correspondence to the Premier and MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, we have now written to:

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure, seeking feedback on its oversight visit and follow-up actions.

The Hawks (DPCI), requesting an update on the investigation into the fire.

As a civic organisation, Phakama believes that public infrastructure, service continuity and accountability must remain matters of public interest.

Public infrastructure is a public asset. Accountability and transparency matter.

Phakama will continue to follow up with the relevant institutions.

PHAKAMA SEEKS ACCOUNTABILITY IN NAMHLA SINGWA MTWA MURDER CASE

More than four years after the murder of Namhla Singwa Mtwa in Mthatha in April 2022, important questions remain about the progress and handling of the investigation.

Following Phakama Eastern Cape's public call for accountability in October 2025, and concerns raised through the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament, we have formally written to the National Commissioner of SAPS and copied the relevant provincial and national authorities.

We are seeking clarity on the current investigation status, the handling of the case docket, the NPA's involvement and the steps being taken to advance the case.

Phakama does not act on behalf of the Mtwa family. Our engagement is in the public interest and is driven by our commitment to justice, accountability and community safety.

Justice must not be forgotten. Accountability must not lose momentum.

Phakama will continue to pursue answers through the appropriate institutional and parliamentary channels.

Building stronger communities through community-owned financial solutions. In our first year, Phakama has taken on something much bigger than a single project:

We are building a community-owned financial institution for the people of the Eastern Cape.

The Phakama Community Banking Initiative (CBI) is taking shape through growing membership and the development of the governance foundations required towards registration, with support from the Cooperative Banking Development Agency (CBDA) and DEDEAT.

Why does this matter?

Because community development is not only about solving today's problems. It is about building institutions that give communities the power, opportunity and means to build a better future.

The Phakama CBI aims to:

💰 Promote saving and financial resilience

🌱 Support local economic participation

📚 Build financial knowledge and responsible use of credit

🤝 Strengthen cooperation and community wellbeing

🏦 Create a financial institution owned by its members and rooted in the community

It is about moving people from being consumers of financial services to members, shareholders and owners.

This is community-led economic development.

🚨 ULWAZI HIGH SCHOOL:

PHAKAMA IS ASKING — WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Daily Dispatch reports today that the principal of Ulwazi High School in Mdantsane has returned to the school after almost 11 months on precautionary suspension, while the investigation into allegations concerning more than R1 million in school funds remains unresolved.

📌 This is a matter Phakama Eastern Cape first raised publicly in October 2025.

Almost a year later, we believe the public deserves clarity.

The issue is no longer only about the allegations themselves. It is also about the progress of the investigation, the protection of school resources and the accountability of the institutions responsible for safeguarding them.

We therefore have questions for the Eastern Cape Department of Education:

🔎 Where does the investigation stand?

⏱️ Why has it taken almost a year?

🛡️ What safeguards are currently in place to protect school funds?

📋 What steps will follow once the investigation is concluded?

💰 What measures are in place to recover any funds found to have been improperly used?

🏫 And what is being done to prevent similar concerns from arising at other schools?

Phakama will be engaging the Department to seek answers and accountability.

We recognise the importance of due process and will not prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

⚖️ But accountability cannot simply stop because time has passed.

Our children's education and the resources intended for them matter.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱

Phakama Eastern Cape congratulates all Eastern Cape matriculants on the successful completion of their Matric examinations. This achievement reflects perseverance, discipline, and resilience in the face of often difficult circumstances.

It is encouraging that national districts achieved a pass rate above 80%. This demonstrates a meaningful improvement in overall standards and benchmarks, and provides a solid foundation on which further progress must be built.

We commend the learners, their families, educators, and communities whose collective support has made this milestone possible. As these young people take their next steps into higher education, skills development, or the world of work, we encourage them to remain grounded in their values and committed to uplifting their communities.
