🥳 Today, the celebrates a momentous 18-year rescuversary at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary! 🥳

In 2007, nine lions consisting of four females and five males, faced malnourishment and poor health due to the Romanian zoo’s financial constraints.

Their future was bleak, with the risk of being sold to private photographers. But in June 2008, FOUR PAWS stepped in and rescued them, bringing them to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. ⛰️

Now, lions Jengo, Maru, and Samson share an enclosure, while Ekira resides in our Special Care Unit (SCU). 🐾

Sadly, Gamba passed in 2024. 💔

Brothers Rudo and Kali show us just how deep their bond is. 🦁 🦁

Initially the two males formed part of The Golden Pride, Rudo and Kali (Sandile’s sons) began showing signs of tension with him, something that had been anticipated from the start.

In the wild, young males naturally leave the pride once they reach maturity to establish their own territory. 🐾

To mirror this natural behavior and ensure their wellbeing, it was decided that Rudo and Kali would be given a territory of their own. 🤩

Did you know you could symbolically adopt lion Rudo? 👇

Today we’re celebrating the incredible dedication of our vegetation team at LIONSROCK! 🦁🐯

In just one project, they planted 19 new trees across the sanctuary to provide shade and comfort for our rescued big cats. These trees will not only offer cool resting spots during the hot Free State summers but also enrich the big cat’s environment by creating natural spaces where they can relax, observe and display their wild behaviours.🌳🐾

It’s a beautiful example of how every department at LIONSROCK plays a vital role in ensuring the wellbeing of our beloved big cats.❤️

Sheeba, one of our beloved lionesses at LIONSROCK, recently underwent a thorough medical examination by our veterinary team, led by our resident veterinarian Christine Steyrer. 👩‍⚕️

To ensure her wellbeing, the 22-year-old lioness was carefully immobilised for a full assessment. This allowed our veterinary team to trim her claws and carry out a full external examination as well. 🐾

During the exam, x-rays were taken to monitor her known spondylosis and blood tests and ultrasound revealed reduced liver function. Sheeba will now receive protective liver supplements, and our team will continue to monitor her closely. ❤️

With ongoing care and attention, Sheeba continues to enjoy her golden years here at LIONSROCK. 🦁

🦁 it’s Andi’s birthday! 🦁

Let’s send Andi your wishes down in the comments as she turns 15 today! 🥳

Born in May 2011, Andi’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Originally purchased from a zoo in Romania to be a mascot for beach photoshoots 📸, her path took a turn when it was discovered that private ownership of wild animals is illegal.

Thankfully, an animal lover stepped in and cared for her near Timisoara during her younger years. ❤️

Today, we celebrate another year of Andi’s majestic life at LIONSROCK, where she continues to thrive. 🐾
