More than 100 years ago, a man named Melvin Jones asked a simple question:

🤔 "What if people used their time and talents to help others?"

That question led to the creation of Lions Clubs International in 1917.

🌎 Today, Lions serve communities in more than 200 countries and geographic areas.

👀 Lions help protect sight and support vision programmes.

🌳 Lions care for the environment.

⚽ Lions support schools, sports and young people.

🤝 Lions help communities during times of need.

The amazing part?

Melvin Jones wasn't famous when he started Lions. He was just an ordinary person with an idea that helping others could make the world a better place.

More than a century later, millions of Lions around the world are still proving him right. 💙💛

🦁 The Man Behind the Movement

When Melvin Jones founded Lions Clubs International on 7 June 1917, he wasn't trying to start the world's largest service club organisation.

He simply asked a question:

"What if people used their success to improve their communities?"

At the time, many business clubs focused on networking and personal advancement. Melvin believed they could do more. He challenged people to turn their energy, influence and resources toward serving others.

That simple idea grew into a global movement that today spans more than 200 countries and geographic areas, with over 1.4 million Lions serving their communities.

Melvin Jones never sought personal recognition. Instead, he dedicated his life to building an organisation founded on service, compassion and community.

More than 109 years later, his vision lives on in every Lions project, every volunteer, and every life changed through service.

🦁🎉 Celebrating 109 Years of Lions Clubs International 🎉🦁

On 7 June 1917, Melvin Jones founded Lions Clubs International with a simple but powerful belief: that people can achieve extraordinary things when they come together to serve their communities.

109 years later, Lions Clubs International has grown into the world's largest service club organisation, with more than 1.4 million members making a difference in communities across the globe.

A defining moment in Lions history came in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become the:

"Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness."

Lions accepted that challenge, and ever since, vision and sight-related causes have been at the heart of our mission.

Today, Lions continue to serve through community projects, youth development, environmental initiatives, disaster relief, hunger programmes and vision services, all guided by the same spirit of service that began over a century ago.

As we celebrate 109 years of service, we honour the vision of Melvin Jones, the challenge of Helen Keller, and the millions of Lions who continue to prove that together we can make a difference.

⚽🏏 From Goal Posts to Goals in Life 🦁

The Ballito Lions Club was proud to build new goal posts and concrete field markers at Osizweni Primary School, helping create a space where learners can play, grow and dream big.

We also returned with a generous donation of sports equipment from a Friend of Lions, ensuring that the facilities we helped create can be put to good use.

For us, community service is about more than just completing a project. It's about following through, building relationships, and helping create opportunities that will benefit the next generation.

A heartfelt thank you to our Friend of Lions for their generous contribution and to everyone who supports the work we do in our community.

Let's be honest, saving the planet is important.

But knowing it's the only one with donuts? That's the motivation some of us needed. 😅

Before joining the Lions Club, I didn't know what a gazebo was.

Now I can tell you:

✅ Which peg goes where

✅ Which side catches the wind

✅ Why it won't fold properly

✅ And exactly how much emotional support a gazebo needs

The weird thing about volunteering isn't the volunteering...

It's the strange responsibilities you somehow adopt along the way. 😅
