🇿🇦 EL NIÑO: LET’S PREPARE TOGETHER.
At Restore Africa Foundation, we are concerned about what changing weather conditions could mean for families already struggling to put nutritious food on the table.
That concern is a reason to act early, calmly and together.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern involving warmer waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean. It can change rainfall and temperatures far beyond the Pacific. In Southern Africa, it can increase the risk of hotter, drier conditions, although the effects differ between places and seasons.
Possible consequences include pressure on water supplies, poorer harvests, lost agricultural income and food becoming harder to afford. These effects can continue beyond the weather event itself because families depend on the next successful harvest. They are risks we can prepare for, rather than outcomes we should assume are inevitable.
🌱 WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?
💧 Protect our water.
Fix and report leaks, use water carefully and follow local water restrictions.
🥕 Strengthen local food production.
Support farmers and existing school and community gardens. Plan planting around local conditions and available water.
🍲 Help keep nutritious meals available.
Support trusted feeding initiatives, coordinate donations and reduce avoidable food waste. Consistent support helps organisations plan ahead.
🤝 Look out for one another.
Check on older neighbours, families with young children and households already facing hardship. Ask what help is needed.
📢 Share reliable information.
Follow official weather forecasts and municipal notices. Check the date and source before forwarding dramatic claims.
🏫 Plan across our communities.
Schools, businesses, faith communities, farmers, municipalities and organisations can coordinate water-saving efforts, food support and practical assistance before needs become urgent.
Early preparation can protect lives and livelihoods. The World Food Programme identifies acting ahead of droughts and floods as a way to reduce their impact on vulnerable communities.
Through Feed a Child and Veggies4Kids, Restore Africa Foundation invites South Africans to help strengthen food security, one meal, one garden and one partnership at a time.
We cannot control El Niño. We can prepare, care for our neighbours and work together to reduce its impact.
Our children, the future building blocks of our nation, deserve that shared commitment. 🌱❤️
