IPSS SEARCH AND RESCUE – UPDATE: TUGELA RIVER & MTUNZINI

*Tugela River*

It is with great sadness that we confirm that the bodies of both children, aged 13 and 14, who drowned in the Tugela River on Saturday afternoon, were recovered today by IPSS Search and Rescue and Mandeni Lifeguards.
IPSS Drone searches and Mandini Lifeguards boat searches were done today.

Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and community. We ask that everyone respect the families' privacy at this very difficult time.

We also thank every team who supported the search over the past three days: Durban SAPS Search and Rescue, K9 Search and Rescue, Empangeni SAPS Search and Rescue, Budal Air (helicopter support), and our IPSS ground teams and drone pilots.

*Mtunzini Beach*

The search for the swimmer swept away at Mtunzini Beach on Thursday is continuing. IPSS teams remain on the ground alongside NSRI Richards Bay and our partners, and we will share updates as they become available.

Please, stay out of rivers. The Tugela's currents, sudden drop-offs and murky water make it extremely dangerous, even close to the bank. Keep children under constant supervision near any water, and swim only at lifeguarded beaches between the flags.

IPSS SEARCH AND RESCUE – OPERATIONAL UPDATE: MTUNZINI & TUGELA RIVER

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by two drowning incidents on our coastline and rivers this week.

*Mtunzini Beach* *– Thursday*

On Thursday afternoon, IPSS responded to reports of a swimmer in distress who had been swept away by strong currents at Mtunzini Beach. A combined sea, land and air search was launched with our partners. On Saturday, the Budal Air helicopter flew to Mtunzini for an aerial search, and this morning our teams carried out beach patrols along the coastline.

*Tugela River, Mandeni – Saturday*

Yesterday afternoon, IPSS responded to a reported drowning in the Tugela River in the Mandeni area, where two children, aged 13 and 14, are reported to have drowned. The Budal Air helicopter was in the air again today, and our two drone pilots are flying search patterns over the river with teams on the ground.

Search operations are ongoing, and we will share updates as they become available.

*PLEASE SWIM SAFELY THIS SUMMER*

With temperatures rising, more people are heading to beaches and rivers. Please keep yourself and your family safe:

• Swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty, and only between the flags.

• Avoid swimming in rivers. Currents, sudden drop-offs and submerged objects are hard to see from the bank.

• Never let children swim unsupervised, not even for a minute.

• Never swim alone, after drinking alcohol, or in rough sea conditions.

• If caught in a rip current, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're free, then swim back in.

• If someone is in trouble, don't go in after them. Throw something that floats and call for help immediately.

Glendale Area - Missing 19 Year old
*Final Update*

IPSS Search and Rescue returned to the Glendale area on Thursday morning, after Glendale SAPS reported locating the body 15m down a steep cliff.

IPSS Search & Rescue teams, alongside Durban SAPS Search & Rescue mobilised to the scene to assist with the recovery of the body.

With the use of a rope system, rescue teams were able to safely recover the body, bringing it up the steep cliff.

The body of the young man was handed over to Glendale SAPS, who will continue the investigation.

Thank you to all those who have worked to find the missing man over the last few days, including Empangeni SAPS K9 Search & Rescue, Durban SAPS Search & Rescue, Badul Air Aviation, Glendale SAPS, our volunteers and the Glendale community.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Glendale Area - Missing 19 Year old *Update*

IPSS Search and Rescue together with Empangeni K9 Search and Rescue and Glendale SAPS went out in full force yesterday in Search of a missing 19 year old Male.

According to reports he was last seen on Saturday night, 15th of August 2026 around 22h00.

K9 Zeus together with volunteers were utilised to search nearby sugarcane fields as well as vacant homesteads in the area. Aerial searches were conducted over steep mountain terrain by our Airwing unit from BadulAir.

Unfortunately with no positive results and the investigation will be ongoing with the Glendale SAPS and Investigating Officer.

Glendale Area - Missing 19 Year Old

IPSS Search and Rescue together with Empangeni K9 Search and Rescue are currently in the Glendale area in KZN after a 19 year old Male has gone missing since the weekend.

Members and Volunteers are currently on scene and assisting Glendale SAPS in the search for the young man.

Community members have also gathered to help with the search and our private helicopter from BadulAir Aviation will also be in the air shortly to assist the team.

We will update again on this developing story.

We would like to thank *Ballito Neighborhood Watch* for the amazing day filled with great food and great vibes. What an incredible success.

Chilli 🌶️was eaten for competition fun and we made sure nobody passes out 🤣
