The center was initially established to cater for the elderly in Alice town. The town compromises of four (4) areas such: Alice Central Area, Golf Course, Happy Rest Area and Hillcrest – a much neglected area in our community.
Phumalanga has since expanded to catering for surrounding areas namely; Mavuso, Nkobonkobo, Guburha, Ntselamanzi and Gqumashe villages. We are operating as a day care center for the elderly, catering for two meals per day and currently cooking for about 300 people per day. Objectives:
1. Alleviate poverty
2. Recreation
3. Adult Education Programmes
4. Access to affordable health care
5. Protection of rights of the elderly (esp. abuse of social grant)
Every year, the center houses undergraduates and post graduate students from the Social Work and Psychology department for fieldwork experiential training placement since 2009. Phumalanga has been able to organize learnerships, internships, apprenticeships and TVET College placements for skills development of the youth and the disabled in our community. The center has had good long relations with local businesses in Alice such as Alice KwaNtu Spar, Fruit & Veg, Coopers Supermarket, Royal Supermarket, Tremear Butchery, Champs Fried Chicken, Jet Mart Stores, Dr. Anjum Surgeries and many other retailers in put town. These have given out donations from time to time which has greatly assisted our community through the center. We have collaborated well with community-based societies such as the Alice Women's Manyano and several individuals who have been donating out of the goodness of their hearts. The center has received food items from FoodForward SA, Siya Kolisi Foundation, Spar Fort Beaufort, Spar Alice and also utilizing funds from the organization. The center has been working closely with our sister organization, African Footprints of Hope Organization (AFoH) and through this working relationship, we had the pleasure of receiving donations and we have worked tirelessly to distribute Personal Protective Equipment (masks and sanitizers) and over 700 food parcels to the destitute families in the communitIes of the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality and beyond.
