IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Introducing the Kerneelsie TNR Charter
At Kerneelsie, we are deeply committed to managing and stabilising community feral cat colonies through humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT REMOVE CATS!
Because our feral programme’s sterilisations are sponsored and we volunteer our services; we are implementing an official Kerneelsie TNR Charter.
This is to ensure clarity, safety, and a unified veterinary standard.
Going forward, public requests to alter or dictate our surgical protocols—including cosmetic choices or specific ear-tipping styles—will not be accommodated.
Here is what you need to know about the science and practice of ear-tipping:
The Global Standard vs. The South African Practice
An ear-tip is a universally recognised, painless indicator that a community cat has already been sterilised and Rabies vaccinated. It prevents the extreme stress of a cat being re-trapped and put under anaesthesia a second time.
The Global Practice: Internationally, organisations like Alley Cat Allies remove the top 1 cm of the left ear for all cats.
** The South African Standard: The South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) guidelines recognise a flat, straight-line cut to identify sterilised cats.
To assist caretakers with colony demographics and health tracking:
** Left Ear Tip: Sterilised Males - ** Right Ear Tip: Sterilised Females
Flat Cuts Only—No "Custom" Styles
We often get requests for V-nicks, notches, or minimal clips to preserve aesthetics. Per SAVA guidelines, the ear must be cut flat and straight. Notches and nicks mimic natural battle wounds from fighting and cannot be reliably identified from a distance. A clean, straight line is the only definitive way to show a cat is cared for.
Our Financial Policy
Kerneelsie covers the cost of trapping, transport and sterilisation. If a property owner or community member refuses our standardised, SAVA-aligned ear-tipping protocol, they will immediately assume full financial responsibility for the private veterinary costs, including trapping and petrol expenses.
Thank you for respecting our team, sponsors, veterinary partners, and the protocols that allow us to save lives efficiently.
