Meet Ditshego Mashaba, a 22-year-old ambitious young woman from Sigagula Village whose passion for nature, conservation and education is shaping an inspiring career journey.

Ditshego completed her Basic IT programme at Sparrow College before pursuing a photography course with Wildshout. She later volunteered at SAME for five months, where her passion for the natural environment continued to grow. Her dedication led her to the WILDshots Outreach Course, which opened the door for her to train as a Nature Site Guide (NQF Level 2).

Having always dreamed of becoming a field guide, Ditshego is now gaining valuable experience while giving back to her community. Through the YES4Youth programme, she teaches environmental education at SAME and supports students who are struggling with mathematics.

Ditshego’s journey reflects determination, growth and a commitment to making a difference. With her sights set on becoming a well-known professional field guide in the conservation industry, she is determined to turn her passion for the wild into a meaningful career and leave a lasting impact on the guiding industry.

Beauty’s Journey

Beauty’s life began with hardship. She never experienced her mother’s love and grew up believing she had been abandoned, while her father was absent too. Her aunt stepped in—not out of obligation, but out of love—raising Beauty as her own daughter, with her great‑grandmother also playing a role in her upbringing.

Later, Beauty cared for her great‑grandmother, who was mentally handicapped/living with disabilities often ridiculed by the community. Where others turned away, Beauty chose compassion, showing that dignity and love can flourish even in rejection.

Academically she was struggling and bullied for having her great grandma, she still strived through and after matric she faced the disappointment of not being accepted into university. Instead of surrendering, she took a gap year, and through SAME found an opportunity to study tourism at SACT, pursuing her dream of being in to a tourism industry.

During her year at SACT, she endured the painful loss of her great‑grandmother, unable to return home to say goodbye. Even in grief, she pressed forward, completing her studies and returning to volunteer at the SAME centre, proving her deep commitment to community.

Her perseverance led to a placement at Tomo Lodge, where she now does her practicals. With her yes4youth earnings, she supported her aunt, helping them move from a cramped one‑room dwelling into a modest three‑room home. Beauty’s journey is one of courage, sacrifice, and transformation—turning pain into purpose and reminding us that even in the harshest beginnings, love and determination can carve out a future filled with hope.

Alpha shares "I grew up in Sigagule, as the firstborn in a family of six. My childhood was shaped by both love and hardship. Life was not always easy. There were many days when there was not enough food at home, and I watched my mother do everything she could to provide for us, carrying the weight of our family with strength and determination.

In 2010, our lives took a turn we could never have imagined. SAME gave my mother an opportunity to work at the centre and supported our family with food, clothing and school uniforms. At the time, I was still young and did not fully understand how deeply those acts of kindness would shape my life.

Years later, we moved away and lost contact with SAME. Yet, I never forgot the good deeds. When we reconnected in 2023, it felt as though a missing chapter of my life had been returned to me. During that reconnection, Shirley Anne told me about an opportunity to study Hospitality and Tourism at SACT.

I had always dreamed of studying Law, but university was financially out of reach. I chose to embrace the opportunity in front of me. I enrolled at SACT, graduated in 2024, and went on to complete an internship at Kapama, where I gained valuable experience and confidence.

Today, I work as a receptionist at khiwane. Looking back, the journey from a young girl who experienced hardship to a young woman building a career and shaping her own future feels incredible.

I have learned that one opportunity can change a life, but determination transforms that opportunity into something meaningful and lasting. I carry my roots with me always, and I will never forget the people who believed in me when I needed it most. My story is still unfolding, and I truly believe the best chapters are still ahead."

The afternoons at the South African Medical Expeditions (SAME) Centre carry a special kind of energy. Children gather to learn, grow, and enjoy their time at the centre.

Mr Frank, the Head of Education, is a man whose presence brightens every student's smile and every face. More than a maths teacher, he is a father figure to all. He doesn't just teach mathematics—he breathes life into it. With patience and clarity, he turns numbers into stepping stones, guiding each child across the river of confusion towards understanding.

With the help of his dedicated teammates, they lift spirits, encourage students, and ensure that nobody is left behind. Their shared commitment is to see every child rise and shine in their academic journey.

The centre is more than just a place of learning—it is a place of healing and safety. It has become a sanctuary where minds are nurtured, futures are shaped, and the quiet dedication of one man and his team echoes throughout the lives of many.

Leading with purpose🌱

At 24, Tonic Mashabana from Mugidi is proof that passion and perseverance can create lasting impact. Coming from a very difficult background, with a blind mother and a sister living with a disability, Tonic faced challenges that could have easily defined his future. However, he chose not to let his circumstances determine his path. After completing his studies in Accounting, Information Technology, and Financial Accounting, he chose to invest his knowledge in others by volunteering at the SAME Centre, where he learned Environmental Education and taught Basic Computer Skills.

Despite his responsibilities at home, where he takes very good care of his family, Tonic stood up and worked hard to change his situation, making things possible not only for himself but also for those around him by giving back to his community.

Today, as a permanent member of the SAME Centre team, Tonic continues to inspire learners from ECD to the senior phase through computer education and mentorship. His dream of becoming an Environmental Statistician reflects his commitment to protecting the environment while using data to drive meaningful change.

Tonic's journey is a powerful reminder that when you serve with purpose, you inspire others to dream bigger.

Santie an Icon of Compassion❤️

Behind every healthy child and every family cared for at the SAME Centre is the unwavering dedication of Santie, our registered nurse. With compassion and commitment, she leads the SAME Medical Clinic by providing quality healthcare to children within the SAME support programmes.

During this reporting period, the clinic provided care to 422 patients, treating a wide range of illnesses and offering essential services such as deworming, HIV testing, and malaria testing. More than treating illness, Santie brings comfort, hope, and dignity to every person who walks through the clinic doors.

She goes out into the community for home visits and conducts HIV roll-outs to support those who are unable to access the centre on a daily basis. In her outreach work, she cares for every home—reaching people with disabilities, the elderly, and young children, with the same compassion and dedication she shows at the clinic.

Her selfless service reminds us that healthcare is more than medicine—it is an act of love that strengthens our community and gives every child and family the opportunity to thrive.
