Urgent Humanitarian Appeal: Displacement Continues and Children Are Paying the Price
Taiz, Yemen | Al-Ma'afer District
As displacement continues and increasing numbers of families arrive in areas hosting displaced people, humanitarian needs across Taiz Governorate are growing every day.
Families are struggling to access the most basic necessities of life, including safe drinking water, shelter, health services, education, and protection for their children.
Against this difficult backdrop, the volunteer team of the Organization for Peace and Social Security (OPSS) continues its field presence in displacement-affected and host communities, supporting the reception of newly displaced families, registering and identifying their needs, and following up on urgent humanitarian concerns.
The volunteers are often among the first to meet families upon arrival. They support reception and registration, listen to families’ concerns, identify urgent needs, and coordinate, where possible, with relevant authorities and humanitarian partners.
Through their daily field observations, the volunteers are witnessing a growing humanitarian challenge.
Some families are searching for safe drinking water. Schools in areas receiving displaced children are becoming increasingly overcrowded. At the same time, other children remain out of school, with limited opportunities to continue or resume their education.
One child is looking for a place in a classroom. Another is waiting for safe water. Another remains out of school and at risk of falling further behind.
For children, displacement means more than losing a home. It can also mean losing access to education, protection, safe spaces, psychosocial support, and the stability they need to grow, learn, and recover.
Based on the needs being directly observed in the field, OPSS calls on humanitarian organizations, donors, and partners to strengthen and expand the humanitarian response in Taiz Governorate, particularly in Al-Ma'afer District and other areas receiving displaced families.
Priority support is urgently needed in:
Safe drinking water and WASH services.
Education and support for overcrowded schools.
Re-enrollment and continued access to education for children currently out of school.
Child protection and child-friendly spaces.
Psychosocial support for children and affected families.
Health services and other essential assistance.
Shelter and basic needs for the most vulnerable displaced families.
The presence of OPSS volunteers in the field provides a direct link between displaced families and humanitarian actors. They receive families, listen to their concerns, identify needs, and document challenges requiring a stronger humanitarian response.
However, the scale of humanitarian needs is greater than the capacity of the local response alone.
Behind every number is a family searching for safety, a parent trying to protect their children, and a child whose education and future are at risk.
Every timely intervention can make a real difference: safe water for a family, a place in school for a child, a safe space to play and learn, or psychosocial support for a child struggling with the impact of displacement.
Taiz and Al-Ma'afer need sustained humanitarian support that matches the scale of growing needs. Children must remain at the heart of this response.
