How can an economy that targets production growth at the expense of planetary and human wellbeing possibly be good for us?!

Mick Cooper, Professor of Counselling Psychology, hosts our next webinar on Tuesday, 6th October examining the deep connection between psychological wellbeing and our economic systems and what we might learn about how to do things better.

We have a new date for our webinar ‘Wellbeing Economics in Practice: Insights from Cornwall and Beyond’ with Tamsyn Widdon and we’d love for you to join us.

The new date and time is: Wednesday, 29th July, midday BST.

As a reminder, drawing on four years serving as Cornwall Council’s sole Green councillor from 2012-2025, Tamsyn will offer an honest insider account of the gap between wellbeing economic frameworks and political reality and argue that the tools are not useless - but inadequately used and poorly understood.

We really hope you can join us for this important conversation!

More than 400 signatories from academia, the United Nations system, trade unions, civil society organisations and social movements across the Global North and South have expressed their support for a new op-ed stating that:

"Economies must be redesigned around the fulfilment of rights and collective wellbeing within planetary boundaries, rather than maximising output at any cost."

But what does such an economy look like in practice, and here, in England?

Tamsyn Widdon spent four years on Cornwall Council where its Doughnut Economics-inspired 'decision wheel' seeks to plug considerations of social and environmental impact into all council decision-making.

Join us on Zoom at 12pm on Wednesday, 24th June to hear her honest, insider account of the gap between policy ambition and political reality and discuss how we can use a better understanding of government funding and accounting rules to deliver real, positive change.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Wellbeing economic principles are being implemented up and down the country.

This is especially true in Cornwall where Cornwall Council's Doughnut Economics-inspired 'decision wheel' seeks to plug considerations of social and environmental impact into all council decision-making.

Along with national models being applied in places like Wales, Scotland, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and more, this makes Cornwall a perfect test case for how to make new economic approaches work in government, and specifically in England.

How fantastic then that - educator, public speaker on ecological economics and sustainable food, and elected member of Cornwall Council from 2021 to 2025 - leads our next webinar. 👏

Drawing on four years as Cornwall Council's sole Green councillor, she will present an honest insider account of the gap between policy ambition and political reality.

Join us on Zoom at 12pm on Wednesday, 24th June to learn from Cornwall Council's progress so far and discuss how we can use a better understanding of government funding and accounting rules to deliver real, positive change in England.

What does wellbeing economics actually look like in action?

Tamsyn Widdon spent four years on Cornwall Council’s Audit Committee, Economic Growth Overview and Scrutiny Committee, and was appointed as one of only two councillors to the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Economic Forum.

She helped strengthen the Council’s Strategic Risks register and embed regenerative economics language in the Business Plan and Good Growth Plan.

She speaks from direct experience of what these tools can and cannot do.

Join us on Zoom at 12pm on Wednesday, 24th June to learn from Cornwall Council’s progress so far and discuss how we can use a better understanding of government funding and accounting rules to deliver real, positive change in England.

The next WEAll England webinar is in the diary!

The next in our series of webinars examining what wellbeing economies actually look like in practice is at 12pm on Wednesday, 24th June.

Join us to hear from Tamsyn Widdon - educator and public speaker on ecological economics and sustainable food and elected member of Cornwall Council from 2021 to 2025 - where we’ll discuss:

✅ How and why Cornwall Council is often cited as a good example of wellbeing economics in action.

❗ The impact its processes and good intentions have on what is actually delivered.

🔧 How the tools for applying wellbeing economic principles to government decision-making are not useless but inadequately used and poorly understood.

Drawing on four years as Cornwall Council’s sole Green councillor from 2012 to 2025, Tamsyn offers an honest insider account of the gap between policy ambition and political reality.

Economies that put people and planet first are absolutely critical to our survival, and to our thriving.

And so it is incredibly heartening to hear the Green Party announce that wellbeing, not GDP, will be the target for its economic policies.

As the Green Party gains increasing attention - in the media, in the polls, and at the ballot box - we expect this announcement to move the needle on public awareness, understanding, and support for wellbeing economic principles, and for other parties to have to respond.

We MUST stop chasing GDP growth at the expense of everything that actually matters. And there is research, expertise, and evidence aplenty in England and around the world to help bring that vital change about.
