🌊 Safety first, adventures second! 🚤

Before heading out to sea, our October students took part in their Pre-Sea Training, provided by Go Dive Mossel Bay .

Being comfortable and confident in the water is an essential part of working in the marine environment. During the training, students learned about boat safety, essential safety procedures, and what to do in an emergency at sea.

One of the practical exercises involved getting into the water with life jackets to practise floating independently, as well as the importance of staying together as a group. By interlocking arms and huddling together, they learned how to conserve warmth and support one another, particularly the person feeling the cold most.

And, of course, no training session would be complete without putting those skills to the test… and taking a group leap off the floating jetty! 😁

A big thank you to Go Dive Mossel Bay for preparing our students with the knowledge and practical skills they need to stay safe out at sea.

We love seeing things from our students’ perspective.

Elzear joined for two months, and this is his POV. Thanks for joining us and contributing to marine research and conservation.

A little unexpected company on our latest tidal survey! 🪲🌊

This Garden Route chafer (𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘢) decided to land on our student Carly Starobin — who was proudly repping her Oceans Research merchandise, of course! 💙

Even during our coastal surveys, there’s always something interesting to discover, sometimes right on your shoulder! 🐚🔎

🌊 One last intertidal survey for !

After five whole months with us at Oceans Research, it was time for Lisa’s last official shift! As part of her project, she spent countless hours exploring our coastline, and intertidal surveys quickly became one of her favourite activities. So, of course, we had to make sure she got to do one last survey before wrapping up her time with us. 🐚💙

There’s something special about looking out across what seems to be nothing more than a stretch of rocks, only for the tide to reveal an entire world of life beneath your feet. From tiny invertebrates to perfectly camouflaged creatures, every rock holds the possibility of a new discovery.

Thank you, Lisa, for five wonderful months with us! We hope you’ll keep exploring the hidden worlds of our oceans wherever your journey takes you next. 🦀🔍

🎣 A successful day of sea fishing with our October students!

Ryan and Elzear proudly showing off their carefully prepared baits before heading out for a hands-on shark research session. 🦈🌊

The trip resulted in four sharks being caught, measured and released, including these two smoothhound sharks (𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘴). The students also had the opportunity to check the sharks for parasites and remove them where necessary, while learning about shark handling and data collection.

Where appropriate, sharks can also be tagged with spaghetti tags supplied by the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI), contributing valuable information to ongoing shark research.

From bait preparation to hands-on data collection, every trip is an opportunity to build practical skills and learn more about the sharks sharing our waters! 💙

🥚🌊 Egg case surveys in Hartenbos!

Our full crew headed out to Hartenbos for another egg case collection session. At first, things were looking a little quiet, with only a few egg cases turning up. But sometimes, it pays to keep looking! We eventually hit the jackpot along the high-tide line, where we found a much larger number of egg cases washed up on the beach. 🦈

These egg cases offer valuable clues about the sharks and skates using our coastline, helping us build a better understanding of local species and their seasonal patterns.

A great reminder that every survey can bring important data! 💙

🌊 When the ocean shows its power!

Some impressive swell rolling into the Point in Mossel Bay, sending huge waves crashing against the rocky shoreline! 💥🌊

A spectacular reminder of the raw power of the ocean and the dynamic environment that shapes our coastline. While we often explore these rocks during our intertidal surveys, conditions like these show just how dramatically the coast can change with the swell.

Nature certainly knows how to put on a show! 💙

Tide pools, tiny creatures, and lots of counting!

Our October students headed out for another tidal survey at the Point, building their intertidal invertebrate identification skills. From recognising species like volcano barnacles to carefully counting individuals and recording data accurately, every survey lets them put theory into practice. 🔍🦀

It might look like a stretch of rocks at first glance, but there’s an incredible diversity of life waiting to be discovered. Learning to identify, count, and document these organisms is an important step towards understanding our coastal ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. 🌊💙

🐬 A great start to land-based cetacean surveying!

Our October students headed to the lookout below the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse for their first land-based cetacean survey session, and Ryan spotted a pod of bottlenose dolphins almost as soon as we arrived! 👀

With dolphins on the move, the team got straight into practising with the theodolite, learning how to track cetaceans and record their movements from land. Not a bad way to kick off their first session! 🌊🔭

A little glimpse into life at sea with our October students! 🌊🐬

From boat introductions and getting hands-on with life on board to selfies and working together as a crew, it’s been all about learning, teamwork, and making the most of every day on the water. 🚤💙

We’re excited to see what the rest of the month has in store for this crew!
