MAPLE – 5 month old dachshund puppy surrendered with severe seizures.

Welcome to the world of genuine dachshund rescue. On Tuesday – Christmas Eve – as most of us were winding down for the upcoming festivities with family and friends, D2DR was urgently contacted by the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) here in Brisbane regarding the possible surrender of Maple - a 5 month old shaded red miniature dachshund. Maple had suffered through a series of severe seizures the previous night. Her owners were unfortunately not in a financial position to even identify the cause of the seizures and were considering having Maple euthanised when ARH contacted D2DR. We of course – despite our own less than rosy current financial situation – immediately accepted Maple’s surrender.

Once in our care, a much needed MRI was carried out on Maple to identify the possible cause of the seizures. The MRI identified an area on Maple’s brain that seemed to have some indication of bruising or trauma. There were no external signs of any injury. Having ruled out more serious causes (a possible liver-shunt was initially considered), Maple was put on initially IV medication to ease her pain and discomfort. By Thursday (Boxing Day), Maple had made a good enough recovery that the IV medication was able to be replaced by oral meds. On Friday afternoon, ARH released Maple into the care of D2DR Director and foster carer Sandra to continue with her recovery. It’s still early days and we are still waiting upon the results of some tests to confirm, but at this stage Maple is expected to make a full recovery.

Once again, we are going to need some help with funds. With the cost of the MRI and 3 days of intensive hospital care (all with the holiday loading that applies), our current vet bill for Maple is over $8,000.

Please if you can help us by sharing and opening up your wallets no matter how much the donation is, we thank you sincerely.

Don't forget that D2DR is registered with Containers for Change which means you can donate the cash earned from recycling your containers and it goes directly to D2DR. I mean after Christmas, who doesn't have a few cans and bottles to dispose of?

All you need to do is use our ID number C10136094 and the money will come direct to our account.

But, Did you know this? You can now you can even save your 100 containers and then book a pickup direct from your home!

How good is that - You could organise a neighbourhood collection or your workplace to collect on behalf of D2Dr and it wouldn't take long to reach 100 containers.

Once you reach 100 just go to this link and book a collection.

https://www.containersforchange.com.au/qld/container-collect

If, you don't think you can manage 100, and instead you want to just do a bag drop location yourself (which you can find in the link below) you just have to write Devoted 2 Dachshunds Rescue Inc and our ID Number (C10136094) on the bag and drop it off - simples!

Use this link to find out where you can take your containers ... https://www.containersforchange.com.au/qld/where-to-return

Christmas Closing Times:-

Over the last 6-8 months we have had the busiest period in our 10 year history.

We have over 100 dogs in our care at the moment - all of them in foster care - and we are bursting at the seams. Everyone, not just the Directors, but our foster carers, co-ordinators and transport people - who are all unpaid volunteers - need a break to spend some quality time with their families over this period.

Please know that people can still contact us and leave messages, but unless it’s an absolute emergency surrender requiring immediate vet/surgery attention, messages will not be replied to until the week starting 6th January.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

If you have been to any of D2DR stalls at local markets early this year, you might have had to absolute pleasure to meet Honey. She is the sweetest little sausage you could ever meet and everyone wanted to adopt her!

But, Sadly Honey was surrendered to D2DR with a very rare eye condition called Bilateral Ocular Dermoid. Without getting too techical, it literally meant that this gorgeous little pup was growing hairs on her eyes! - yep you read that correctly.

So D2DR took her in and one of our fabulous Committee members Sandra Beevers took her in and cared for her. Honey had to have surgery and the goal of the surgery is to eliminate the lesions on the cornea or other parts of the eye, and thankfully, once the surgery is performed, it typically prevents the regrowth of the dermoid, as this condition does not have the potential to recur.

Without this crucial treatment, Honey faced the very real risk of severe eye infections that could lead to blindness or even death. The surgery was not just about improving her quality of life; it is about saving it.

And our supporters once again stepped up and helped raised over $2,500 towards her surgery. Honey had the surgery and came through with flying colours.

In August 2024 Honey was adopted and is now living her best life with her big brother who is a 3.5 yr old choc and tan dachshund called Roly.

Roly apparently loves having a crazy little sister to keep him active, they are often caught dooming Zoomies in the yard and barking at anybody who dares to walk past the gates - Sound familiar?? Honey seems to like chewing her owners furniture, but look at that face!! you could not be mad at it for anything.

Devoted 2 Dachshunds could not achieve what we do without our supporters, so Honey, D2DR her new family thank you for your support.

How's this for a great feel good story in time for Christmas? 💝

This little girl Crystal was surrendered to D2DR in a bad way, having been diagnosed with Heartworm.
"Heartworm is a parasitic worm that lives in a dog's heart, blood vessels, and lungs. and can lead to death".

But D2DR took her in and placed her with a wonderful Foster Carer who has looked after Crystal so well, that indeed she is now Heartworm free and living her best life WOO HOO !!!!

So thank you to all of our Foster Carers and the other volunteers that help us to raise funds to achieve what we do, and thank you to everyone that donates, even donating $1, helps, as every cent that goes to D2DR is spent on the dogs and vet bills and thats what we are all about
