It might not sound particularly exciting. But after everything that’s happened in Astley, this matters.

Wigan Council is currently consulting on its new Local Plan, essentially the document that will help decide what gets built where, and the rules future developments will have to meet across the borough.

The new plan contains protections around noise, pollution, lighting, traffic, cumulative impact and people’s quality of life. In many ways, it’s exactly the sort of protection we’ve spent so long asking for.
But that leaves a pretty big question for us...

What about the communities already living with the consequences of development?

And how do we make sure what has happened here isn’t repeated somewhere else?

We’ve now submitted our response to the consultation.
Our message comes down to three things:
Help those whose lives you’ve already impacted.
Protect the land you’ve now promised you won’t develop.

And make sure what has happened in Astley cannot happen elsewhere.

They’re all as bad as each other.

This was the most recent Wigan Council meeting. The whole thing is a pantomime.

We’ve spent well over a year trying to get what has happened in Astley properly discussed at full council.

Yet they‘ve already found time for a shmooze-fest praising their former leader and voting to award him with the highest honour available. This is the man that ignored our cries for help for 12 months.

Residents are still living with the consequences. The problems still aren’t sorted. And when it gets brought up, the conversation gets shut down.

Do these councillors live on another planet? For Cunliffe to be so out of touch that he said: “To blame him for this is a gross injustice”… while the warehouses continue to destroy our homes, is unbelievable.

There is an injustice here, but it’s not that people are laying some blame on David Molyneux for creating a culture that allowed these warehouse to happen.

The injustice is what’s happened to the people living next to these warehouses who are still fighting to be heard.

Watching this meeting, it doesn’t matter what side of the chamber they’re sitting on. It all feels like empty words, point scoring and people trying to gain political favour while talking about the communities they supposedly represent.

We don’t need any more speeches about how much you care about communities.

Show us.

Give Astley Warehouses the proper debate and action it deserves.

What executives at big corporations probably don’t understand is that some people are driven by a huge sense of injustice… just like many of the Astley Action Group and our followers.

Lucky for us it seems zoë bread’s drive to fight for injustice is stronger than most. And she has a huge community backing because of it.

Not only does she help us tell the story of what’s going on here, she regularly sends us money she’s made from the sale of T-shirts to support our legal fund. The latest amount being £520 🙏🏼

Thank you to Zoë and everyone else who’s contributed to our legal war chest.

These images are 2 years apart. Imagine if this happened to your home?

We are crowdfunding to pay for legal support ahead of a public inquiry into whether Whistl should be able obtain an Operator’s Licence for this development…

On 10th and 11th November neighbours will be given the chance to give their representations against the Operator’s Licence to the Traffic Commissioner, at Wigan Athletic Stadium…. whistl will be who our legal representation will be fighting against.

This will be very much focused on Whistl’s operation of HGVs rather than how this warehouse was approved.

But we will also continue to fight against how Wigan Council and Peel Logistics Property pushed through this development just metres from our homes without a second thought of the hundreds of people that this would impact on the surrounding community.
