POWiS Promoting the recording of churches and other faith sites. Some of these date back to the earliest phase of Christianity in Scotland.

POWiS is the name of the Places of Worship in Scotland Project, organised by Scottish Church Heritage Research (SCHR), a Charity, set up to work with local societies and volunteers, to record places of worship while still in use.We have a data base of over 10,000 sites and churches in Scotland. All are on the website, but only 2,500 (approximately) have been completed and the rest vary from name only to a sentence or two. We base the information on original photographs, taken on a site visit and all are taken by volunteers or, occasionally, staff. We record POWiS for the benefit of everyone interested in understanding and protecting this rich heritage of the people of Scotland. We share an interest in bringing to a wider public an understanding of all the places and buildings that have been used as places of worship in Scotland, regardless of faith, denomination or present condition.PictishCarving1 (thumb)SCHR has set up the Places of Worship in Scotland project to complete an illustrated Gazetteer for publication on the Web and in book form. Places of Worship range from early Christian sites, through small rural churches to cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, temples and meeting halls. Others are medieval ruins, some are from the post–reformation years, while a majority date from the period of population growth in the 19th Century. Now, as church attendance is in decline, many religious buildings lie redundant and uncared for, while some have been reused as offices, pubs or housing, others have been demolished and the sites redeveloped.abdie (thumb)SCHR recognises a need for a contemporary record of all these buildings and related places because the social and historic information associated with them should not be forgotten. The buildings and their history are important for today and SCHR considers it important to promote this aspect of the environment, locally and nationally. The Gazetteer is being compiled by a team from the SCHR committee, a small staff and many volunteers. The purpose is to form a national record for use by local communities, schools, congregations, local societies, family historians and researchers, planners, tourist bodies and government departments. It will be a record of all the sites and buildings, rural and urban, used by communities of all faiths and which form part of the collective experience of the people of Scotland.

In these times of unprecedented church closures the POWIS team was delighted to hear of a beacon of hope that come in the form of Downfield Mains Parish Church in Dundee. The Reverend Nathan McConnell has been in touch with the POWIS team to tell us of the revitalization of the parish community in Downfield Mains which includes the refurbishment of the church building to accommodate the growing congregation. For Nathan, the cherry on the cake would be a church bell that could be used to ring out, not just before services but to celebrate weddings and baptisms and let the local community know that joyful events are happening in their church.

Nathan says, “it may sound crazy but I believe that the bell is called a prayer & says, “we are here!” DMC is looking to continue sending God’s praise into the atmosphere in and around the north of Dundee. I got the idea when I was in Herrnhut, Germany hearing the story of how the N***s silenced and stole all the bells. And to hear the miracle it was restored to the local community and rings today. I would like to see the same thing happen here.
I’m so sorry for the late notice, but I just arrived back from Germany and felt very convicted to see if we could get a bell by the adult baptism of six new members which is scheduled for July 6.
My desire is to find an ancient Scottish church with a history of either sending missionaries and/or revival. But I understand that might be difficult. Either way, any assistance would be greatly appreciated”.

So, if anyone has any ideas as top where Nathan might find a suitable bell to ring out in Downfield Mains, please contact him directly by email:- [email protected]

The Pictish monastery site at Portmahomack had been a site of worship off and on (mostly on!) for the best part of 1500 years until the church closed in 1946. It was rescued by a group of local volunteers who formed a trust, found ways to have the whole site excavated and establish a fascinating museum inside the old kirk building, which contains Pictish carved stones and also tells the story of the development of the site and building over the years.
