A long-overlooked chapter of St. Helena’s history is now formally recognized.
On Saturday, April 11, 2026. community members, civic leaders, and representatives from regional Chinese cultural organizations gathered to dedicate a historic plaque marking the site of St. Helena’s 19th-century Chinatown.
Despite on-and-off spring rain, the celebration was joyful and well-attended — a fitting tribute to this essential part of St. Helena’s history.
Chinese immigrants played a vital role in the early development of St. Helena — working in vineyards, building infrastructure, and forming a vibrant neighborhood that contributed to the town’s growth. Though much of Chinatown’s physical presence has faded, its legacy remains an important part of our shared story.
This plaque ensures that the contributions, resilience, and community of St. Helena’s Chinese residents will be remembered for generations to come. Come see for yourself near the corner of Main St and Charter Oak, just south of Gott's Roadside in St. Helena ~ 929 Main St (Royal We Tasting Room)
