A busy week delivering for Waterford on key issues like rural housing, youth mental health, fisheries, education and community infrastructure.
🏛️ In the Dáil and Committees:
• Chaired the second meeting of the Oireachtas Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Committee — progressing a serious work plan for the sector.
• Spoke on the urgent need for Jigsaw youth mental health services in Waterford alongside David Cullinane T.D.
• Backed the joint opposition motion calling for action to address the Assessment of Needs crisis.
• Challenged the Minister on rural housing failures and growing isolation in small communities.
• Called again for sanctions against Israel in response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
🏘️ Working for Communities in Waterford:
• Launched Sinn Féin’s discussion document on a new community centre for Dungarvan with Cllr. Kate O’Mahoney.
• Worked with Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy to tackle the Department of Education in their footdragging when it comes to approving new school bus routes in Aglish and Ballyduff.
• Met with Council engineers to push for progress on local link bus stops, footpaths, road safety and school zones.
• increased the pressure on Dept Transport and NTA for a new Portlaw–Dungarvan Local Link bus services with Cllr. Catherine Burke
• Continued clinics and casework — including housing, healthcare and pension issues raised locally.
• Worked with Cllr Jim Griffin to highlight the lack of funding this year for Waterford’s local ports and harbours.
🌍 National and Local Advocacy:
• Took part in the European Maritime Day conference in Cork, meeting with key stakeholders in the marine and coastal sectors.
• Held a direct and frank meeting with the new Minister for Fisheries — setting out the need for a radical policy shift.
• Pressed the European Commissioner for Fisheries on damaging post-Brexit trade terms and the need for urgent reform.
• Spoke at the Immigrant Council of Ireland’s national conference on political inclusion and the power of local organising.
📻 Media Engagement & Outreach:
• Interviewed on WLR’s Déise Today about the scandal of rising school absenteeism and the fact that Waterford is the only county without a single Educational Welfare Officer.
• Met with the Irish Postmasters’ Union — highlighting the essential public role of local post offices, especially in rural communities.
• Continued outreach on rural safety — launching a new survey in villages across Waterford to shape Sinn Féin’s policy.
🏐 Community Spirit:
• Supporting Waterford’s senior hurlers and ladies footballers in a crucial weekend of Munster action ⚪️ 🔵
