Meet Snow A. Schwartz — a Brooklyn-based organizer and artist using poetry, code, and ecology to tell powerful stories.

During their GROW Externship with The Sludge Hub, Snow created Sludge Ecologies, a website documenting the resilience and recovery of coal-impacted Appalachian lands.

This work brings attention to environmental healing and the stories behind it.

Biochar allows us to rewrite the story of carbon, turning what is often seen as a pollutant into a powerful, soil-regenerating resource. At The Coal Factory, we convert waste biomass into this porous, nutrient-absorbing material and use it to restore strip mined substrates, strengthen degraded soil, and create long-term ecological resilience through a process that blends traditional wisdom with community innovation.

Char Generation: Using our mobile Ring of Fire kiln, we convert waste biomass into clean, porous char right where it’s collected; minimizing transportation and locking in carbon emissions.

Char Crushing: The char is then broken down into the ideal particulate size for inoculation, mixing, and application.

Char Inoculation: With our unique “coal urinals,” community members help charge the char with nitrogen-rich inputs, making it a powerful soil enhancer.

Char Distribution: Finally, we spread mix this infused biochar with compost and apply it upon abandoned strip mines, rebuilding depleted soil and supporting the return of native plant life.

This is what it looks like when coal works for the betterment of ecological health

Take action in coalfield restoration, work alongside community-led experts to repair the streams, hills, and landscapes impacted by legacy coal mining. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain valuable skills while making a lasting impact on both the land and the local community.

GROW Externships creates life-changing paid externships for disadvantaged and underrepresented (BIPOC, woman-identifying, and LGBTQIA2S+) students and developing professionals, vitalizing their careers in sustainability, environmental science, and related fields.

It’s good for the climate to…. make coal? Creating coal acts as a climate positive for the same reason burning coal is bad; because it stores carbon. We take standard biomass and repurpose it to make a climate positive soil amelioration which we distribute upon abandoned strip mines. This carbon-rich material serves to restore damaged landscapes, improve soil health, and demonstrates how communities can turn environmental challenges into opportunities for revenue and renewal.

Generation: Our Ring of Fire kiln converts waste wood into porous carbon-rich char using a clean and efficient burn.

Crushing: To prep it for soil use, we crush the char

Inoculation: The char is then soaked with nitrogen-rich liquids, such as compost tea, helping it to come alive with nutrients.

Distribution: We mix this nutrient-loaded char with compost and apply it to abandoned strip mines, where it improves soil quality, boosts water retention, and creates a foundation for ecosystem restoration.

Together, we’re showing that community-led restoration can truly transform the land.
