General information
The Good Grief Center dba Grief Place was founded by one Hospice nurse, Cindy Phillippi and two Hospice volunteers, Susan Braden and Mary Bates, who saw a need in the community and responded proactively. It initially began in the fall of 1997 when these volunteers were impacted by the increasing numbers of their patients who were leaving young children and adolescents as surviving members of the immediate family. Through their research, they learned that the community did not offer an structural, on-going support, to meet the needs of grieving children. They developed a proposal to use Hospice Memorial Funds, from the Central Washington Hospital Foundation, to bring a professional grief counselor for a one day training session. This training, held May 7th 1998 drew 39 participants, 12 of whom indicated an interest in offering a children's support group. Since then several others have joined this effort including a wide range of community members: school counselors, college students, clergy, current hospice volunteers and nurses, funeral homes professionals, business professionals, and many others. The ranks of dedicated volunteers swelled.
