Save the Tiles Volunteer team in a race against time to help homeowners rescue treasured craftsman tiles before this history is bulldozed away forever. WHY SAVE THESE TILES?

Help preserve Altadena’s history -- savethetiles.org Altadena is a magical oasis in the biggest county in the country. It’s filled to the brim with historic homes that sadly perished in the firestorm, but many of their priceless historic tiles still remain. Utilizing a growing volunteer army of residents and experts, with the backing of local heritage organizations, we aim to preserve a piece of Altadena's architectural heritage for homeowners to use in their new homes. In craftsman style tradition, fireplaces are usually adorned with one-of-a-kind, handcrafted tiles – and chimneys often the last standing structures. Working with homeowners' permission, we're offering free sifting, restoration, and storage until homeowners can reclaim tiles. Our team is documenting every step of the way with plans in the works for a book and subsequent documentary about this special journey. Through this preservation, we will help rebuild Altadena to its former glory, but even better. But the bulldozers will arrive soon, so we must act fast. Please join us in saving these tiles for future generations!

Just a few weeks ago, this block was full of fireplaces to rescue. This stunning Claycraft facade is the last one standing. Soon to be cleared as well. It’s a bizarre feeling seeing so many chimneys, one after another, to nothing at all. But it’s a clean slate now and the future holds so much more for us — and the tiles can’t wait for their new homes 🖤

“Today, the operation has expanded to include six to eight teams of masons and tile artists and remediators who are working as quickly as possible to rescue the tile, remove all mortar and make necessary repairs, and then catalog and store the tile if homeowners do not have access to storage.

This is preservation at work in real time, and it’s about so much more than the tiles.”

“We’re saving beautiful California history.”

Big thanks to Hyperallergic and Angella d'Avignon for this lovely story! We’re so grateful for your help amplifying our message and helping save more tiles for fire affected families in Altadena and Pasadena. This piece features great quotes by Placemakers Inc, who drove from San Francisco to volunteer one weekend and Mark Read, who’s been incredibly gracious with sharing his experience and Silverlake Conservation who are the best in the preservation biz!
