Paisley Halloween Festival cast its spell over the town centre on Friday 23 October, as thousands turned out for the first night of one of Scotland's biggest Halloween celebrations. The highlight was the Halloween parade, bringing this year's Haunted House theme to life, with hundreds of professional and local community performers making their way through the town centre. Monster installations and eerie lighting dressed some of Paisley's best-known buildings, including the Town Hall and the Museum. The free festival is delivered by Renfrewshire Council's events team with Cirque Bijou and Woodroffe Bassett Design. Renfrewshire Council has since confirmed that Saturday's event (24 October) is cancelled because of the severe weather forecast and the amber warning for wind from Storm Boelo this evening. The clocks go back an hour at 2am this Sunday (25 October), but strictly speaking Paisley runs on its own local time: 17 minutes and 43 seconds behind Greenwich Mean Time. Before the railways, every town kept its own solar time, and Paisley sits 4.43 degrees west of Greenwich, so the sun peaks here a little later. The story is tied to Coats Observatory, where Thomas Coats paid for a transit telescope and three precision clocks, housed in Transit House beside the tower, where staff recorded and kept the time for the whole town. After Railway Time brought the country into line with Greenwich, Paisley began sending GMT from the observatory to public clocks around the town, including the Town Hall clock in late 1884. Transit House is part of the transformed Paisley Museum campus, which reopens to the public in early 2027. So if you turn up a few minutes late on Sunday, you were on Paisley time! The clocks go back an hour at 2am on Sunday, but Paisley has a perfect excuse for a lie-in 🕰️ Strictly speaking, the town runs on its own 'Paisley time', 17 minutes and 43 seconds behind GMT.

It all goes back to Coats Observatory and Transit House, where precision clocks set by the stars once kept time for the whole town, sending signals to the Town Hall clock and the mills. Transit House reopens as part of the transformed Paisley Museum in early 2027.

147 years ago this week, on 22 October 1879, the foundation stone of Paisley Town Hall was laid by Mrs Clark, mother of George Aitken Clark of the Anchor Mills thread family, who left money in his will for a public hall for his native town. It opened in January 1882, and after a £22m transformation it reopened in 2023 as one of Scotland's finest venues. 🏛️ What's your favourite memory of a night out, a concert or a dance at the Town Hall?
