Freemasonry has a rich and diverse spread of members, but sometimes newer and younger members can find themselves in a minority. In this respect the Adair Club is more of a social club offering an opportunity for all younger and newer brethren to share friendship and fellowship as well as having some fun with other like minded Master Masons. The club will organise various social events, some for M
asons only, some to include their partners and families and others with the chance to bring along friends. It is hoped this will ensure we embrace our member’s families and bring them into our Masonic lives as well as offering the potential opportunity for friends who may be interested in joining having the chance to meet some Junior Freemasons in a social environment. The club is named after the youngest Provincial Grand Master (PGM) of the Province of Somerset, Colonel Alexander Adair (b.1829). A military man having begun his career in the Somerset Militia, he obtained a commission in the Coldstream Guards, serving in the Crimean War being present at both the Battle of Inkerman (often called “The Soldiers Battle” because of the high rate of officer mortality) and the Siege of Sebastopol. He was appointed PGM in 1864 at the age of 35, although his tenure was cut short in 1869 due to his increasing military duties. He served as a magistrate and was appointed Brigadier General of the Western Brigade. As PGM “his noble manners, high bred courtesy and his kind and fraternal heartiness, won for him the cordial respect and love of all his Brethren”. It is hoped that, despite his short tenure as PGM, his memory and spirit live on in the Adair Club.
