DO THE MATHS.

The South African government has released its latest rhino poaching statistics. Every year there is a slight decrease and the headlines celebrate “good news”. It’s ridiculous.

230 rhinos were killed for their horns between January and August 2026.

That is 18 fewer than during the same period last year.

A decrease.

Last year, 352 rhinos were killed in South Africa.

And Saving the Wild will not celebrate hundreds of dead rhinos as a conservation success.

Because numbers need context.

Kruger National Park was once home to more than 12,000 rhinos.

Today, just over 2,000 remain.

You cannot keep measuring success simply by counting how many rhinos are killed each year without looking at how many are left to kill.

More than 10,000 rhinos were poached in South Africa between 2008 and 2023, according to the government’s own figures.

Since then, another 420 were killed in 2024.

Another 352 in 2025.

And another 230 in the first eight months of this year.

A falling body count is not the endgame.

The endgame is dismantling the syndicates.

The endgame is a criminal justice system that makes wildlife crime a high-risk business.

The endgame is justice.

With regard to Saving the Wild’s work advocating for minimum sentencing and specialised courts, we should have an update from the Ministry next month, and will report back when the time is right.

In the meantime, have you signed? Be part of the solution.

The Citizen reports…

A suspected poacher was found dead in the Kruger National Park (KNP) after fleeing from a herd of elephants, following an illegal incursion through the Pafuri area.

The grim discovery underscores the deadly risks of wildlife crime and the park’s intensified anti‑poaching operations.

Illegal entry
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said Kruger National Park rangers received information on Saturday, 12 September 2026, about two suspected poachers who allegedly entered the park illegally through the Pafuri area on Friday, 11 September 2026.

“Preliminary information suggests that the two suspects encountered a herd of elephants while inside the park and fled in different directions, subsequently losing contact with one another.

“One of the suspects later returned home and reported that his accomplice was missing, indicating that he had heard him screaming during the incident,” Louw said.

Arrest
Louw added that the matter was reported to the South African Police Service (Saps).

“With the assistance of the local community, one suspect was arrested. The individual subsequently admitted to participating in the unlawful entry into the park and accompanied SANParks Rangers from the Pafuri Ranger Post to the area where the incident reportedly occurred.”

He said rangers followed tracks from the Luvuvhu River for approximately six kilometres into the park, where they discovered the body of the missing suspect.

“During the search, the remains of a buffalo, believed to have been illegally hunted, were also found.”

Louw said Saps has been informed and will continue with the necessary investigative and forensic processes.

Long before the Springboks became world champions, springbok were roaming the ancient landscapes of the Cradle of Humankind.

Fossil evidence from the Cradle shows that springbok of the genus Antidorcas lived across this ancient landscape for more than two million years.

Today, the springbok is South Africa’s national animal and one of the most powerful symbols of our country. 🇿🇦

So after another rather spectacular weekend for the human Springboks, it seems only right to celebrate them here at Saving the Wild’s Residence at Sibani, in the Cradle of Humankind.

Whether friends or family, the four bedroom tented villa is a place to come together and create memories that will last the test of time.
