Great toasties meeting last night at WPH Toastmasters, themed Time Travel! The table topics questions had us going back and forth in time, forcing us to think quickly on our feet! 🤪

We had a member induction session which formally welcomed 3 new-ish members to WPHTM! 😊We promised to support them as they learn, grown and thrive as many others have done at the club!🌈

Hoping to see many of you at the next meeting on the 3rd Dec, which will be the second last one for the year. Our last meeting will be our annual Xmas meeting on the 17th Dec - more about that later. 🤶🎄

Enjoy & have a great day! 😊

And on the 16th July 2024, the WPH toasties got together over a pizza and some vino to think back on the successes of the year that was and to look forward, with the new Exec team, to the next year!

The theme for 2024-2025 is “Learn, grow and thrive” which will apply to our club and to each toastie. Look forward to hearing your stories, seeing you grow and thrive!! 🤗

March 2023 newsletter - Perception vs Reality

Many of this month’s speeches can be related to the concept of Perception vs Reality. Our speakers made us think hard about our assumptions and beliefs, and showed us how our perceptions can be easily fooled by ourselves or others. ‘The side effects of having a brain’, Ross

Happy Holidays everyone! We had a great time at our Christmas party last week. We played Secret Santa, listened to a prepared speech, and enjoyed a feast together.

As we look ahead to the new year, we want to remind you that our next meeting will be on 17th January. We hope to see you there!

I've asked many visitors to our club over the years the question why they wanted to visit us and the answer is almost always the same. To see how we function and what we're all about. It doesn't take them long to realise that not only can they learn tips and tricks to help them speak better but they can have a lot of fun at the same time.

That was my dream when I joined Toastmasters and WPH Toastmasters club has been the one club that has given me that dream. I met done truly wonderful people who share the same pain about public speaking as I do. Who says you cannot learn and grow as a speaker while having fun at the same time?

So come on board and join us and have a taste of what it's like to learn from ordinary people who once were, where you are now. Maybe one day you will enjoy helping others grow as speakers, from people who are scared to speak in small crowds, to people who can run a group workshop like a pro.

Over the last 5 years I've become a member in 6 different Toastmasters clubs. This experience has given me the opportunity to grow in my public speaking quest. While I have had fun in each of these clubs and left most of them them the years there is, there is one that I just cannot let go. West Pennant Hills Toastmasters Club has been my favourite from the start. It was my second club and has now become my only club. I find the people, the energy, the culture and the sincerity of the members to be the best. It's become my happy place to go to every fortnight. So give it a go and you'll know what I mean. Come and join us for a visit. I promise you will not regret it.

On Tuesday, we had a BACK TO FRONT meeting. The meeting went in reverse. We evaluated each speaker before they delivered their speech. Although the evaluators did not have a time machine, they had the power to decide what would happen in the future.

As an evaluator, how would you recommend areas of improvement to a speech you have not heard yet? You make it up! Like this:

● You were jumping like a bunny. It's better to stand still or use the stage more purposefully.
● Your were speaking very loud. Also your hands were up in the air for over half your speech. It's better to use big gestures and vocals sparingly otherwise it loses its effect when you really need to use them to enhance your message.
● You walked outside the room while you were speaking. It's better to remain in the room so the audience can hear you speaking.
● Your jokes were very funny, however you were giggling and laughing throughout your speech which disrupted the flow. Take deep breath and rehearse the jokes more so you would be less inclined to laugh at them.

It was really challenging to be a speaker. Not only did you need to deliver your speech as usual, but you had to do whatever the evaluator said that you did! All the speakers played along, and we had plenty of fun and laughs. It was an easy way for us to switch things around and step outside our comfort zone.

Sometimes, doing things in reverse gives you new ideas that you could not have otherwise thought about. If you get stuck in life, maybe doing the opposite of what you usually do will get you unstuck. If you're comfortable doing something with your right hand, maybe try doing with your left hand instead. Embrace feeling uncomfortable, and you will grow and benefit from that discomfort.
