Arches Local Strengthening connections between people and public spaces in Chatham.

Born out of the Big Local programme, Arches Local exists to strengthen connections between people and public spaces in Chatham. We believe these spaces, along with the people in them, have the potential to celebrate culture, spark human interaction, promote active lifestyles and enable nature to flourish. As a collective of ambitious local people, we’re often curating public art, tree lining streets and shaping local policy. Outside of Chatham, we also support organisations to deliver meaningful change of their own through consultancy.

Last week's sweltering heatwave has kept us busy watering the trees and flower baskets along Luton Road!

With a hot summer ahead of us, please look out for any street trees near you and give them a much-needed drink, ideally early in the morning or late evening.

This week saw our twelfth mural completed in Luton, painted by artist WOSKerski.

Trams were a popular mode of transport for Chatham Dockyard's workers in the early 1900s, and this inquisitive fox terrier was no different. Gyp was often seen escaping her home in Edinburgh Road to board the trams, making journeys to the Dockyard and back.

Luton Road is now tree-lined for the first time in its history!

This winter we planted a further 12 street trees and over 50m² of soft landscaping, taking the total to 20 trees since 2022.

Our corner of Chatham is finally getting the attention it deserves, with much more still to do.

If you're local and interested in joining our regular gardening days, please get in touch.

In our final mural of 2025, artist Mister Tris depicts Britain's endangered plant, the Man Orchid.

Known for its unusual appearance resembling tiny 'green men', Chatham is one of the very few UK locations where it now grows.

Completing our tenth mural, artist Jack Lack creatively interprets the arrival of Henry Charles Lawrence in Chatham.

Henry worked in the country's finest gardens and moved from his hometown of Cambridge in 1868, bringing his expert knowledge of flowers to our town to set up a successful plant nursery.

In our ninth mural, artist Liam Bononi interprets the story of Luton resident and Shorts Brothers employee, William Mason.

William dreamt of flying his own plane, and in 1939 he built a Luton Minor at home with his family's help. But with WWII grounding all aircraft, sadly he never took to the skies to turn his dream into a reality.
