The Kenya Blue Economy Skills Training Program, in partnership with CRAWN Trust convened a Gender Dialogue Session on policy and practice in Mombasa, bringing together county leaders and stakeholders from Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale counties.

The dialogue session brought together County Officers, County Secretaries, Members of County Assembly (MCAs), County Directors, CECMs, and Chief Officers. It served as a critical platform to strengthen collaboration and align efforts toward advancing gender equality and inclusion within TVETs.

Building on insights from the 2025 regional gender dialogue sessions, the engagement aimed to revisit key issues affecting equitable participation in TVETs and the blue economy, while also providing space for counties to share experiences, highlight progress, and reflect on persistent challenges. The session further sought to identify sustainable resourcing strategies for Vocational Training Centres and to facilitate collective goal-setting and action planning.

The dialogue underscored the importance of strengthening TVET systems as a pathway to unlocking opportunities within the sector and the blue economy.

The KBEST Program had a meaningful engagement with Kidogo to explore a shared vision of supporting partner TVET institutions to establish quality and affordable daycare centres.

For many young women, especially trainees, the burden of childcare and unpaid care work remains a significant barrier to accessing and completing quality education and skills training. Too often, promising futures are paused or derailed not due to lack of ability or ambition, but because of limited support systems.

This initiative speaks directly to that reality. By integrating childcare solutions within learning institutions, we are not only easing the care burden but also creating an enabling environment where female trainees can fully participate, thrive, and complete their training. It is a step toward more inclusive, equitable education systems that recognize and respond to the lived experiences of learners.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to practical, sustainable solutions that empower women, strengthen families, and build resilient communities. When we invest in care, we invest in opportunity.

Pamela Gordon commended the Academy for its commitment to inclusive training and skills development, and expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration between Canada and Kenya in strengthening technical and vocational education, particularly within the blue economy sector.

"Kisauni Vocational Training Centre in partnership with the KBEST program, has established a daycare centre to support young mothers pursuing TVET education. This has enabled many young mothers to complete their training and transition successfully into employment.

The institution also supports girls from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing sanitary towels and fostering mentorship through female staff. These mentors guide students on sexual and reproductive health, rights awareness, and professionalism within their respective trades.

Through these initiatives, Kisauni VTC demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive education, empowerment, and expanding opportunities for young women to thrive both academically and professionally."
